Meryl Streep's Chemistry With This A-List Star at the Golden Globes Sparked Dating Rumors
The Golden Globes is often an awards show ceremony where people debut their relationships officially — look no further than Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner’s very romantic PDA moment. So, it was no surprise that when fans noticed Meryl Streep having some serious chemistry with her Only Murders in the Building costar, they assumed there might be a fling going on.
Streep and Martin Short looked very comfy and cozy together as they sat side-by-side at Sunday’s ceremony. They were both nominated for their roles in the Hulu show’s third season — Short for his role as Oliver Putnam, and Streep for her role as Loretta Durkin. While they didn’t win, some viewers thought they were leaning on each other for support, which sparked romance rumors.

Another fan chimed in about the iconic comedy connection, “Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if that’s true… that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft…” And the people are looking for the next power couple, so why not Streep and Short? “If Martin Short and Meryl Streep are dating that’s the biggest power couple going,” they wrote.
Well, Short’s publicist spoiled all of the fun, confirming to The Messenger, “They are just very good friends, nothing more.” We can’t cross off that Streep-Short romance on our 2024 Bingo card, it seems. The talented duo would make a great couple, but even though they are single, they are not dating each other.
Streep unexpectedly announced her separation from husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, in October 2023. “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a rep for Streep said in a statement to Us Weekly.
Short was married to Nancy Dolman for 30 years until her death from ovarian cancer in 2010. In 2019, he revealed to AARP magazine how much he missed his late wife. “Our marriage was a triumph. … I still communicate with her all the time,” he shared. “I believe that when people die, they zoom into the people that love them. The idea that it just ends, and don’t speak of them — that’s wrong … to me, she’s still here.”
