It's Mewtwo versus a swearing Pikachu in new 'Pokémon Detective Pikachu' trailer

And here we thought Pikachu was so sweet and innocent. Everyone’s favorite Pokémon drops a decidedly PG-rated word in the new trailer for Pokémon Detective Pikachu, the live-action film that lets us hear the thoughts behind those cute little pika-pikas. This second trailer (a follow-up to one of Yahoo Entertainment’s favorite trailers of 2018) gives viewers a better look at the many three-dimensional Pokémon who populate Detective Pikachu‘s noir world, plus glimpses of an actual Pokémon battle (Pikachu versus Charizard!) and a frightening incident involving Mewtwo and a Pikachu parade balloon. Watch it above.

Voiced by Ryan Reynolds, the film’s version of Pikachu is a smart-mouthed, highly caffeinated sleuth whose real language can be understood only by 21-year-old Tim (Justice Smith). To everyone else, it’s “pika pika.” But Tim’s surprising ability to translate Pokémon-speak makes him the perfect sidekick for Pikachu’s investigation into the disappearance of his former partner: Detective Harry Goodman, who also happens to be Tim’s dad.

The new trailer reveals that Mewtwo, the genetically engineered, cat-like Pokémon with almost unlimited powers, will be the film’s major villain. (Although given that it’s a detective-noir, the true kidnapper is probably someone completely unexpected. Our money is on Jigglypuff.) Pokémon aficionados will notice a whole lot of other familiar characters passing through. With repeated viewings, we spotted upwards of 20, among them Ludicolo, Arcanine, Squirtle, Charmander, Growlee, Machamp, Snorlax, Snubbull, Bulbasaur, Morelull, Lickitung, Pancham, Psyduck, Greninja, Loudred, Gengar, Cubone, Dialga, Flareon, Palkia, Aipom and Mr. Mime.

Along with the trailer, Warner Bros. has also released a new poster full of hidden Pokémon. Can you catch ’em all?

Reynolds, making the unlikely pivot from Deadpool to Pikachu, has been milking the motion-capture role on social media. In a tongue-in-cheek video called “Outside the Actors Studio,” posted yesterday to Reynolds’s Instagram, he recalls staying in character throughout the entire shoot, much to the chagrin of his wife, Blake Lively, and their children.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu opens on May 10.
