Time 100: Anthony Fauci, Donald Trump, Megan Thee Stallion, Michael B. Jordan make list for 2020

Paging Dr. Anthony Fauci: You’re wanted on the Time magazine cover, stat.

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and leading figure on the Trump administration's White House Coronavirus Task Force was named one of the Time 100. The annual list is made up of 100 of the year’s most influential leaders, artists, icons, titans and pioneers and was revealed Tuesday night.

Late-night TV-show host Jimmy Kimmel praised Fauci, writing for Time that the doctor “doesn’t sugarcoat his words and refuses to be pressured by politicians.” Kimmel continued, “He delivers the truth, as difficult as it may be to hear, earnestly and with one goal: to save lives. His courage and candor have earned our trust. We are all fortunate to have a man of his wisdom, experience and integrity to help us navigate these difficult waters.”

Fauci has frequently butted heads with the president over the global pandemic and the government’s messaging about COVID-19. Recently, the nation's leading infectious disease expert warned we’re far from being out of the COVID-19 woods, contradicting the president’s assertions that things will soon return to normal. “If you're talking about getting back to a degree of normality which resembles where we were prior to COVID, it's going to be well into 2021, maybe even towards the end of 2021," Fauci said. “I just think we need to hunker down and get through this fall and winter, because it’s not going to be easy.”

President Trump also made the list, though there’s less praise in his inclusion than in Fauci’s. Time's senior White House correspondent Brian Bennett writes, “(Trump) downplayed the severity of COVID-19 early on, refused for months to wear a mask and pressured government scientists to change their recommendations, as the virus spread to eventually kill more than 200,000 Americans.” Bennett calls Trump’s presidency “norm-shattering,” and concludes, “Voters will decide on Election Day whether Trump’s use of power will be a cautionary tale or a preview of more to come.”

Former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, also made the list.

The list isn't all politics, though. It also includes actor, producer and Emmy nominee Michael B. Jordan, of "Black Panther" and "Creed" fame. "Michael B. Jordan just has a presence – and an energy and a talent – that stands out. It’s refreshing," Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington wrote for Time. Washington is slated to direct Jordan in his film adaptation of the book "Journal for Jordan," written by Dana Canedy.

Washington continued, "When it comes to Michael, we should expect the unexpected. I’m happy to be a small part of his journey, and I can’t wait to see how it’s going to turn out. He’s the next generation, and it’s good to know we’re in good hands."

Also making the list is young up-and-comer JoJo Siwa, the 17-year-old YouTube personality known for appearing on the TV show "Dance Moms" and for her singles "Boomerang" and "Kid in a Candy Store."

"JoJo Siwa is a ray of sunshine in a world that seems scary right now," wrote reality TV personality and mega-influencer Kim Kardashian. "As a parent, you want your kids to admire positive figures. There’s no one more positive than JoJo."

Kardashian continued, "It’s no wonder my 7-year-old daughter North and millions of other children around the world adore her." The seasoned celebrity also offered young Siwa some advice for her journey: "Live in the moment. Have fun. Be yourself and surround yourself with people who will keep you positive."

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who got everyone’s attention and then some with her naughty summertime Cardi B collaboration “WAP,” also made the list. “She was shot this summer, and still people tried to tear her down. But she’s out here still loving and being sweet,” said actress Taraji P. Henson. “The industry might try to pigeonhole her in this rap game, but she’s got a plan that’s much bigger. And we got her. I just want her to keep winning.”

Husband and wife Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union are also there, each with their own entry. "With his support for his daughter Zaya, who is transgender, Dwyane has set a powerful example for parents and for society of how to be good allies to young people who are figuring out who they are," musician John Legend writes in his endorsement of Wade. "He and Gabrielle don’t love Zaya despite who she is. They love Zaya, and they celebrate who she is and they embrace her."
