Michael Richards reveals his son’s favorite ‘Seinfeld’ character ... and it’s not Kramer
Michael Richards, 74, has entertained millions of viewers with his portrayal of Cosmo Kramer on the long-running sitcom “Seinfeld.” But his most important audience was one 9-year-old boy: his son, Antonio.
While chatting with TODAY co-host Hoda Kotb for his first interview in almost 20 years, Richards said that he stopped watching his performances on the hit show “because I would just see how I could make it better. And that would make me cuckoo.”
Many years later, Richards decided to watch the show with his then 9-year-old son. “We watched them from beginning to end,” he said.
“Did he think you were funny?” Hoda asked.
“Oh yeah. He did,” Richards said with a proud grin. “Everybody. The whole show was just ... cooking.”
“But he had to think you were the funniest, I would imagine,” Hoda said.
“Well, you know, I’m his dad,” Richards began, “and I’m kinda kooky around the house, so for him to see all that on television, a comedy show, was pretty amazing.”
"Who was his favorite character?" Hoda asked.
“His favorite character, really coming into the show and all his friends, they’re into Newman,” Richards said. “Wayne Knight, who played Newman so brilliantly.”
Richards has an older daughter, as well. His children are 38 years apart.
“This is a real second round for me, and I’m able to be really present because I have more time than I had before. It’s a very fortunate situation,” Richards said in 2016. “I say this is a great time to have children.”
