Welcome to Stars Hollow — we mean Brighton, Michigan. 40,000 fans of the hit series, Gilmore Girls attended a viral event to immerse themselves into a world with Luke’s Diner, Doose’s Market and The Dragonfly Inn. The town of Brighton, Michigan transformed itself into the main street of Stars Hollow for a day for fans to enjoy a life like the Gilmore Girls.

The event, called ‘Destination Stars Hollow,’ was co-founded by Brighton resident, Laura Boote, a social media influencer and mortgage originator, who is an avid fan of the Warner Brothers series. Boote worked with her co-founder, Kathleen London, and together the two put on quite the show.

I don’t think any of it has set in yet,” Boote explained of the excitement, while London shared, “It was lightning in a bottle. They came for Stars Hollow, but they discovered Brighton.”

How did ‘Destination Stars Hollow’ come about?

The idea for ‘Destination Stars Hollow’ was a creative one and all of the Gilmore Girls fans were excited about it. It all started with a simple post on Instagram, where Boote and London shared their idea for the day, which took place on September 21, 2024.

The event was thoroughly planned out for guests, from hotel bookings to planned in-store activities. Boote, who has seen the series around 30 times, was very in tune with what Stars Hollows residents would want to see. London is also an avid rewatcher and knew that Brighton was just the kind of place for Gilmore Girls fans to enjoy.

“I’m sitting here looking at what a cute town this is, but so many people don’t come down. They never shop. And yet they all want to be in Stars Hollow,” London explained. “If you just get [away from] your TV and get off your cell phone and come downtown, we are your Stars Hollow.”

What did ‘Destination Stars Hollow’ consist of?

Brighton, Michigan completely transformed into the town of Stars Hollow, redesigning itself as the fictional town’s hot spots. Some of these include Luke’s apartment, Stars Hollow High, Miss Patty’s and Stars Hollow Books.

There were multiple food locations for event attendees that included the infamous Friday Night Dinners at Richard and Emily’s, Al’s Pancake World, Weston’s Bakery and, of course, Luke’s Diner. Boote and London even went as far as to create episode inspired locations, like April’s birthday party, The Life and Death Brigade, and Lorelai and Rory’s movie nights.

Brighton stores transformed themselves into the spots and planned special events to make the attendees feel like they were really in Stars Hollow. The store Coast on Main transformed into Rory’s Closet, where guests were able to create charm bracelets, as well as shop clothes just as cute as Rory’s.

Attendees were also able to pick up a Stars Hollow Gazette newspaper at Brighton’s ArtVentures. And for those who had reservations at one of the restaurant’s in town, the co-founders created special Gilmore Girls themed menus.

The ‘Destination Stars Hollow’ event was a resounding success

With 40,000 attendees, ‘Destination Stars Hollow’ proved successful. Considering that number is five times Brighton, Michigan’s normal population, the townsfolk were overwhelmed with the number of people who showed up to support.

All of Brighton’s best spots shared that their sales were through the roof on the day of the event, many saying they were double that of their best day. All the stores reported they were selling out of their items, especially with guests staying overnight and for their VIP experiences. But don’t worry. If you’re upset you missed out on this exciting weekend, London and Boote are planning to make it an annual thing.

All we have to say about the success of this thrilling event is “Oy, with the poodles already.” At least that’s what Lorelai would say.
