Mid-Century Modern: Matt Bomer & Nathan Lane to Star in Hulu’s Newest Golden Girls-Like Sitcom
Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has enlisted Golden Globe winner Matt Bomer and Emmy winner Nathan Lane to star in the forthcoming multi-cam series titled Mid-Century Modern.
This would mark both actors’ latest collaboration with Murphy, whom they already worked together in multiple shows, including Glee, American Horror Story, and American Crime Story. Bomer is best known for his leading performance in the procedural drama White Collar. His most recent TV project is Showtime’s 2023 miniseries Fellow Travelers. As for Lane, he had recurring roles in two hit shows such as Only Murders in the Building and The Gilded Age.
What is Mid-Century Modern about?
Per Variety, Mid-Century Modern is being described as an “even gayer roommate sitcom” version of the classic comedy series The Golden Girls. The outlet’s sources note that Bomer will be playing a male version of Betty White’s Rose from the original, while Lane will be portraying a version of Bea Arthur’s Dorothy. In addition, Linda Lavin has been also been cast to play Lane’s mother.
Set in the gay mecca of Palm Springs, the series is created by Will & Grace’s Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, with Murphy serving as an executive producer. The pilot will be directed by James Burrows. The original NBC series was created by Susan Harris, which ran on-air for seven seasons from 1985-1992. It starred White, Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as four older women living together in Miami.
