Mike Flanagan Celebrates Sober Milestone on The Fall of the House of Usher Premiere Day
Horror auteur Mike Flanagan shared on social media Thursday that he’s grateful for much more than the release of his new Netflix series, The Fall of the House of Usher.
“Big day today. New show is out and I really, really hope you enjoy it. And, I’m five years sober today — a milestone that fills me with gratitude,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Difficult to celebrate much, given the state of the industry today, but wanted to express my thankfulness.”

Flanagan, an acclaimed film director whose TV series include The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Midnight Club, previously shared that his 2021 horror-drama Midnight Mass coincided with his reaching three years of sobriety. In an interview with The New York Times at the time, Flanagan said of his years of heavy drinking: “My biggest fear wasn’t that I would die in a drunken car accident. It was that I would kill someone else and live. That is the beating heart of Midnight Mass.”
Indeed, the series follows Zach Gilford’s Riley, who returns to his isolated island hometown after serving time in prison for a drunk-driving incident that killed a woman. Gilford, a member of the group of actors who frequently show up in Flanagan’s projects, also plays young Roderick Usher in The Fall of the House of Usher, which began streaming today.
The Usher cast also includes Carl Lumbly (Alias), Malcolm Goodwin (iZombie), Paola Nu?ez (The Purge), Daniel Jun (The Expanse) and Kyleigh Curran (Doctor Sleep) as well as several actors who appeared in The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and/or The Midnight Club: Carla Gugino, Aya Furukawa, Ruth Codd, Sauriyan Sapkota, Rahul Kohli, T’Nia Miller, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Zach Gilford, Katie Parker, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Matt Biedel, Igby Rigney, Robert Longstreet and Annabeth Gish.
