Mike Zombie, Former Drake Producer, Addresses Fan-Made Kendrick Lamar “OVO Mole” Theory
Drake and Kendrick Lamar are well beyond their monumental lyrical joust from earlier this year, but that hasn’t stopped fans from dissecting their lyrics and coming up with new theories. Mike Zombie, a former producer for the Toronto rapper, recently addressed a claim that he was K. Dot’s mole from the OVO camp.
A fan keyed in on Zombie and his potential side-switching in a TikTok video. They acknowledged that the producer was signed to OVO Sound and produced Drizzy’s 2013 hit “Started From The Bottom” before he began working with West Coast artists such as The Game, Dom Kennedy, and Casey Veggies.
The fan then referenced Lamar’s “6:16 In LA” line “Before you figure that you’re not alone, ask: / ‘What would Mike do?'” which was originally interpreted as a reference to Drake’s muse Michael Jackson. They suggested that it could’ve been a double entendre and also been intended to be connected to Mike Zombie. The claim got deeper when fans realized Zombie had a record title “616” from several years ago, which people believed that the former Degrassi actor stole a flow from.
Naturally, the TikTok and theory picked up steam on the internet. Mike Zombie took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote “Lol wtf people be thinking I’m doin?” and then added “People are hilarious” with laughing emojis several hours later, seemingly shutting down the idea that he is the person Kendrick Lamar was rapping about. It looks like fans may have to go back to the drawing board.
This wasn’t the first time someone claimed Drake had disloyal people in his camp. Pusha T revealed that Noah “40” Shebib was the person who revealed that the “Family Matters” rapper had a secret son during his 2018 appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast. The Clipse member claimed 40 told a woman that he was “disgruntled” with things in OVO due to a lack of “notoriety.” He also revealed that the crew visited Adonis to bring him gifts.
This information fueled Push’s 2018 diss track “The Story Of Adidon,” where he revealed to the world that the five-time Grammy winner was hiding a child. The father of one effectively bowed out of their beef after the fact and acknowledged it as his “first loss in the competitive arena of rap” in his 2019 interview with Rap Radar.
As for Drake’s recent beef with Kendrick Lamar, his foe has capitalized on his victory and the success of his diss track “Not Like Us.” He performed the previous Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 record six times at his Juneteenth Pop Out concert, released the music video on July 4, and was announced as the Super Bowl LIX halftime show performer earlier this month.
With Super Bowl LIX happening one week after the upcoming Grammys, February is shaping up to be a major month for the Compton rapper. His halftime show performance was met with negativity from fans who wanted Lil Wayne to get the nod in his hometown, and Lamar responded with an untitled Instagram-exclusive record calling out the entire entertainment industry.
He also addressed his struggles with being so present as of late, rapping “Say hello to your future fate, the culture bred with carnivores/ You let ’em snack, they eat your face, the signatures is bein’ forged/ They wonder why I’m not enthused to drop/ The more visible you get, the more your spiritual is tried/ It’s cynical to say I know these artists petrified.”
