Miles Teller Is Back in the Navy for ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ Remake at Paramount
You can’t keep these fly boys down. After Miles Teller starred and flew alongside Tom Cruise in “Top Gun Maverick,” the actor is getting back in a Navy uniform for a remake of the 1982 romance “An Officer and a Gentleman.”
Teller will star in the remake of the Oscar-winning romance that originally starred Richard Gere, Debra Winger, and the late Louis Gossett Jr., an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

“An Officer and a Gentleman” told the story of a young man going through the Naval Academy to complete his training as an aviation officer, only to get caught up in the headwinds of a whirlwind romance from a girl on the wrong side of the tracks and a tough Gunnery sergeant.
Miles Teller…Navy aviation…where have we heard that before?
The remake will be a modern retelling of the story. Dana Fox (“27 Dresses”) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, which was originally penned by Matt Johnson.
Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen’s Temple Hill is producing the remake. No director or other cast has been set, though we’d be excited by a “Spectacular Now” reunion with Shailene Woodley in the Debra Winger role.
Taylor Hackford directed the original “An Officer and a Gentleman,” which was nominated for six Oscars and won two, including one for Best Supporting Actor for Gossett Jr. The original was also a box office smash, grossing $128 million at the box office in 1982.
Gere recently paid tribute to Gossett Jr., who passed away in March, saying that as tough as his drill sergeant was in the film, “you always felt this warm heart beating in him.
“That’s why Lou was so effective in that role: he wasn’t just a ‘tough guy’; he was someone who really cared about all those kids that he was mentoring,” Gere said.
While “An Officer and a Gentleman” doesn’t necessarily have the IP value you would expect for a remake, romantic films such as “Anyone But You” or the sexy “Challengers” have done well at the box office of late.
Teller most recently starred in 2022’s “Spiderhead” for Netflix alongside Chris Hemsworth. That film re-teamed him with “Top Gun Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski. In addition to the “Top Gun” sequel for Paramount, Teller also worked with Paramount on the limited series “The Offer” about the making of “The Godfather.”
Up next for Teller, he’ll star in another thriller and romance, “The Gorge” for Apple TV+ alongside Anya Taylor-Joy for director Scott Derrickson.
