Miley Cyrus holds hands with Kaitlynn Carter after emotional VMAs performance
After her emotional performance at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus found comfort in her new flame.
Cyrus, 26, and Kaitlynn Carter, 30, were photographed holding hands as they made their way through a sea of paparazzi into Up & Down nightclub for Columbia Records’ afterparty. Also at the bash in New York City was Carter's ex, Brody Jenner. He was accompanied by new girlfriend, Josie Canseco. No word yet on if the two couples interacted, but if they did, it was likely friendly. Cyrus and Carter sent Jenner a joint birthday gift last week.
Before hitting the stage, Cyrus and Carter packed on the PDA behind-the-scenes. An eyewitness told Entertainment Tonight the two held hands backstage and at one point, Carter put her hand on Cyrus's butt. "They looked very much like a couple," said the source.
Cyrus debuted her breakup song "Slide Away" at the awards show Monday night. The emotional tune is seemingly about the end of her marriage to Liam Hemsworth, who filed for divorce on Aug. 21. Cyrus made a subtle statement during the performance with a change in lyric. Instead of crooning "You're right, we're grown now," in her first live performance of the song she belted, "You're right, I'm grown now." Cyrus emphasized her point, singing that part twice.
According to reports, Hemsworth's partying allegedly took a toll on Cyrus and their marriage. She all but confirmed the rumors in "Slide Away" with lyrics like, "I want my house in the hills / Don't want the whiskey and pills / I don't give up easily but I don't think I'm down." The artwork for the single included bottles of booze and pills bobbing around a pool. As for "the hills" line, that could be a shoutout to her current flame as Carter starred on The Hills reboot with Jenner.
Although Cyrus was photographed kissing Carter hours after it was revealed she and Hemsworth separated, the former wild child adamantly denied reports she cheated. In a candid Twitter thread, Cyrus owned up to past behavior, but declared "I can admit to a lot of things, but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating."
Cyrus rattled off a list of things she will admit to, including taking drugs and cheating in former relationships when she was young.
It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20’s. I have not only smoked, but advocated for weed, I’ve experimented with drugs, my biggest song to date is about dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom.

But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled,I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here. I’ve learned from every experience in my life. I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring. I’ve grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP.

BUT at this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar.

She concluded by stressing, "I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where I was when I was a younger."
That’s certainly in line with Cyrus's lyrical switch-up.
