Millie Bobby Brown defends Penn Badgley's stalker character in 'You': 'He's not creepy, he's in love'
Penn Badgley might want to sit Millie Bobby Brown down and explain to her why it’s unhealthy to like his character, Joe Goldberg, in the Netflix show You.
The 14-year-old actress defended Joe — who is a serial killer and stalker of women — on her Instagram Story. “So, I just started that new show You,” she begins, “He’s not creepy, he’s in love with her and it’s OK. So I’m obsessed with it, I’m binge-watching it, absolute banger Netflix.”
Brown continues in another video, “I know everybody’s going to say, ‘Uh, he’s a stalker, why would you support that?'” The Stranger Things star interprets his stalking of romantic interest, Guinevere Beck, to mean love.
“No, like, he’s in love with her and it’s just, like, just watch the show and don’t judge me or my opinion,” she concludes.
Naturally, Brown received some backlash for her controversial take.
“He’s not creepy, he’s in love with her” is she really that stupid lmao pic.twitter.com/0QfMb6pOyb

love how millie bobby brown excuses the stalker/main character joe on the tv show ‘you’, just because he’s in love w beck. UM…. it’s called domestic abuse, honey. he is a literal PSYCHOPATH. even the actor said to not root for him, multiple times. but it’s ok cos he’s in love!

Just heard about the Millie Bobby Brown/YOU thing and I’m just so horrified I don’t have words. 📢Stop romanticizing and normalizing abusive, unhealthy behavior.📢

The teenage star isn’t the only one to swoon over Joe Goldberg — a trend Badgley finds so disturbing that he’s spoken out multiple times, reminding viewers they are missing the point.
Ditto. It will be all the motivation I need for season 2. https://t.co/fy2hojauDG

But you’re supposed to see past my face TO the crazy shit! It’s the other way! The other wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyhhyyyyggg 🙂

In fact, Badgley was so put off by his character, he had difficulty understanding why anyone would fall for him in the first place.
“I personally was troubled…” he told E! News. “I understood the appeal, but I was really ambivalent. I was really troubled, and that was also what [executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble] said was appropriate about me playing him. I remain ambivalent. I’m really questioning why people like Joe so much.”
Since Brown is in the middle of binge-watching You, maybe she hasn’t gotten to the end of Season 1 … which might snap her back to reality.
