Miners, get ready! A Minecraft Movie is coming to theaters in 2025.

Minecraft, a video game for ages 10 and up, skyrocketed in popularity following its release in 2011. Having sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, according to Hypebeast, it is now the most popular video game of all time. The game's main objective? Build, explore, and interact, with players being able to choose their own adventures.

The upcoming A Minecraft Movie will have a similar premise. The film follows "four misfits" — played by Jason Momoa, A Good Girls Guide to Murder's Emma Myers, Orange Is the New Black's Danielle Brooks and up-and-coming actor Sebastian Eugene Hansen — who are pulled into the Overworld, a "bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination."

Napoleon Dynamite writer and director Jared Hess is at the helm of A Minecraft Movie.

"Trying to adapt something that doesn’t have a story — it’s an open sandbox game ... I like the challenge. There’s got to be a fun, ridiculous movie here. And there is," he told The Salt Lake Tribune in January 2024. "I just can’t disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they’re going to murder us.”

What is A Minecraft Movie about?

According to Warner Bros. Pictures' official logline for A Minecraft Movie, viewers will meet four characters, Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks), all struggling with ordinary problems when they travel through a portal to the Overworld where they meet expert crafter Steve (Jack Black).

To return home, they must master their new world where "creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival" against evil things like Piglins and Zombies.

Who is in the A Minecraft Movie cast?

In addition to the four main "players," Momoa, Myers, Brooks and Hansen, A Minecraft Movie stars Jack Black, who confirmed his role in January 2024.

"An actor prepares," the Nacho Libre alum wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of him reading Minecraft Basics for Dummies. Black plays Steve who embarks on a magical quest with the "misfits."

That same month, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon and Flight of the Conchords actor Jemaine Clement came aboard, per Deadline.

Is there a trailer for A Minecraft Movie?

Warner Bros. released the first official teaser for A Minecraft Movie in September 2024.

The 75-second clip shows Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie and Dawn wandering across the vast and vibrant landscape of the Overworld as Steve is heard saying, "Step right this way! Anything you can dream about here, you can make."

The teaser reveals that the Overworld is home to several square-shaped animals — pink sheep, evil-looking pigs, howling wolves and goofy llamas — as well as expert crafter Steve, whom the group is visibly unimpressed by.

"This guy is such a toolbag," Natalie says with a roll of her eyes.

Who is directing A Minecraft Movie?

Jared Hess, best known for directing Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is the director attached to A Minecraft Movie.

While talking to Nerdtropolis in May 2024, Hess said working with Black again was "so much fun." He added: "It is so bananas. He's unbelievable in the film."

Where was A Minecraft Movie filmed?

A Minecraft Movie was shot in Auckland, New Zealand, "on ginormous soundstages," Hess shared with The Salt Lake Tribue. Filming officially wrapped in May 2024.

What has Jack Black said about A Minecraft Movie?

Black hasn't been shy about his excitement for fans to see A Minecraft Movie.

"I'm in a little movie called Minecraft. I don't want to brag, but it's kind of a big deal," he jokingly said during an interview with IGN in March 2024. The actor, who had been playing the video game nonstop, also had some advice for new players.

"Get that house built. Fast! Because you don't want to get to night times and not have shelter. Get that bed made and make sure you got snacks," Black added.

When will A Minecraft Movie be released?

A Minecraft Movie will premiere in theaters on April 4, 2025.
