'Modern Family' star Sarah Hyland hospitalized, reveals photo of swollen face
Sarah Hyland got real for National Selfie Day — and the truth hurts. The Modern Family actress reveals she was hospitalized on Monday. While it’s unknown what specifically she’s being treated for, Hyland battles kidney dysplasia and has been open about struggling with chronic pain and illness all her life.
On Thursday, Hyland shared a close-up photo of her swollen face. “Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle or feelin cute. This time for #NationalSelfieDay, I’ve decided to share my truth. As painful as it is,” the 27-year-old actress wrote on her Instagram Story. “So here is my face that was torn from work against my will. But I’m very grateful it was. Health should always come first.” She added the hashtag “#stayhelthymyfriends.”
In a second Instagram Story, Hyland shared a video of her cuddling with her rescue dog. “Can’t wait to come back to my precious angel princess. She’s perfect and knows exactly what I need at all times,” she wrote. “This was taken this past Sunday. Day before hospitalization. She was literally telling me to get treatment.”
Yahoo Entertainment reached out to a representative for the actress, but did not immediately receive a response.
Hyland was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia, which is when the organs do not develop properly, at age 9. It required her to get a transplant in 2012 — courtesy of her father.
“I would be in a lot of pain a lot of the time. If I didn’t get, like 12 hours of sleep — It felt, like, none at all,” she revealed on Good Morning America in 2012.
“I try and make it so that Haley is always sitting down,” she said of her Modern Family character Haley Dunphy on the ABC show. “If you notice, she’s always sitting down a lot… or leaning and texting… When Haley walks up the stairs that’s like my work out for the week.”
It’s a condition that can cause those suffering to lose weight and muscle mass. Last year, Hyland hit back at people who criticized her for being too skinny.
“I haven’t had the greatest year. Maybe one day I’ll talk about it but for now, I’d like my privacy. I will say that this year has brought a lot of changes and with that, physical changes,” she shared. “I have been told that I can’t work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting… I love to be STRONG. (I’ll be using that word a lot) Strength is everything. Being strong has gotten me where I am. Both mentally and physically. I am not a fan of ‘being skinny.’ ”
Hyland revealed that she had basically been “on bed rest for the past few months.” She also explained that a side effect of the medication she takes, Prednisone, can be a swollen face.
“I don’t mind when you say that I look pregnant. Or fat. Because I know that my face is swollen from my medication that is saving my life,” she added. “For those on Prednisone I know what you’re going through and I commend you sticking it out as I have. My self confidence is not rendered from your comments… Be the best version of yourself. Be healthy.”
This spring, Hyland revealed that her health was causing her to take a step back once again. In March, she posted a photo of her and her pup hanging out at home writing, “my life for the next 6 to 8 weeks.”
While she didn’t elaborate, the actress asked any of her Twitter followers who experience chronic pain for advice.
For those who are chronically ill and in chronic pain: Have you had the experience of doctors not listening to you? If so, how do you not tear their heads off with your bare hands? 🙂

Can I share experiences and feel connected to my followers who are members of the chronically ill community, which I have been a part of for 27 years, for ONE SECOND before “news” outlets decide to make a WHOLE STORY out of it? YOU👏🏼DON’T👏🏼KNOW👏🏼MY👏🏼LIFE👏🏼

Hyland has a good support system at home — and we’re not just talking about her sweet pup. The actress has been dating The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise alum Wells Adams since October 2017.
