“Miss getting to work with this lady,” Johnston wrote. See the photo below:
The CBS comedy debuted Sept. 23, 2013. It originally starred Anna Faris as Christy, a newly sober, single mom trying to raise her two kids with the help of her previously estranged mother Bonnie (played by Janney). The series eventually shifted gears and focused on Christy and Bonnie’s Alcoholics Anonymous group, which consisted of Marjorie (Mimi Kennedy), Jill (Jaime Pressly), Wendy (Beth Hall) and, eventually, Tammy (Johnston).
Johnston made her Mom debut in Season 5 as Bonnie’s former foster sister Tammy. She returned in Season 6, upon her character’s release from prison, and was promoted to series regular for Seasons 7 and 8. All told, she appeared in 57 episodes.
Faris stunned fans when she left Mom after Season 7. Five months later, CBS announced that the series would end with Season 8.
“Getting to be part of Mom these past eight years — showing the laughter, love and hope that can come with recovery — has been one of the great honors of my life,” Janney said at the time. “I want to thank [executive producers] Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker [and] Nick Bakay, and all the writers… for giving us these wonderfully flawed and lovable characters to bring to life. I miss seeing all of your faces. And these amazingly talented actors I got to act with everyday!!! Mimi, Jaime, Kristen, Beth, and the coolest man on the planet, Bill Fichtner. And of course Anna Faris.? [Director] Jamie Widdoes for your patience and dedication and enormous talent steering this ship!? Our entire crew, your laughter and love and dedication to this show has made it a joy to come to work. And last but not least all of our extraordinary fans!!! Thank you for all of your support over the years.”
Johnston also weighed in on the cancellation, adding: “Such a huge bummer…. This show has been such a total joy and honor to be a part of. It’s been life-changing for me to be on a show that’s about recovery and women supporting each other [through] thick and thin. Plus, Mom has the BEST fans ever.”
TVLine readers gave the Faris-free series finale an average grade of “B.” To revisit our May 2021 post mortem, click here.
