Almost a year after starring as Beth in Evil Dead Rise, Lily Sullivan is back with a new horror feature from Well Go USA. Titled Monolith, the 95-minute film will be released in theaters and on digital on February 16, 2024 after it premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival.

What is Monolith about?

Desperately in need of a new story, Monolith follows a disgraced journalist trying to redeem herself. Stuck and unsure about her next step, the protagonist finds herself investigating an odd conspiracy theory that will soon hunt her in exchange for a career-defining story.

Monolith is directed by Matt Vesely and written by Lucy Campbell. The official synopsis reads: “While trying to salvage her career, a disgraced journalist begins investigating a strange conspiracy theory. But as the trail leads uncomfortably close to home, she is left to grapple with the lies at the heart of her own story.”

Described as a “bold, unnerving, and claustrophobic film,” Monolith is produced with only one actor and shot in one location. Filled with symbols, the film “explores questions of truth” and the parts an individual only wants to believe.

According to the director, Sullivan’s character — “a woman of immense privilege” — claims to seek the truth, though in ways that will only benefit her.

“Her podcast is the modern paradigm of a self-aggrandizing narrative. Though presented as truth, it is, in fact, very carefully cultivated. Investigating her mystery, The Interviewer hunts for a sinister purpose behind the visions of despair that plague her subjects, but when the truth of that despair is revealed to be the crimes upon which her family’s privilege is built, she repeats the cycle of so many before her : she hides from that truth, buries it, instead choosing to live in ignorance rather than risk the life she leads,” the director explained.

Sullivan, who also starred in Netflix’s romantic thriller I Met a Girl, received nothing but good words from the director himself.

“Lily’s emotional — and indeed , physical — commitment to the role was a sight to behold on set, and this quality is embedded in every frame of the film. It is an immense challenge to carry a film all on your own, and Lily rose to that challenge in ways that surprised even us,” said Vesely.

Monolith will hit theaters on February 16, 2024. Check out the poster and the stills from the film down below:
