REID: Clive Davis and The Recording Academy will present its annual pre-Grammy Gala on, Feb. 9 at The Beverly Hilton the evening before the 55th Annual Grammys Awards. As part of the evening’s celebration, the 2013 Grammy Salute To Industry Icons will honor Epic Records’ Chairman and CEO Antonio “L.A.” Reid. The Recording Academy will present Reid with the President’s Merit Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the music industry and the impact his efforts have had on music and the business of music.

APPLE IN TALKS WITH FOURSQUARE ABOUT DATA-SHARING DEAL: Apple is in early discussions to integrate local data from Foursquare Labs Inc. into its mapping application, according to people familiar with the talks, as the company continues to build an arsenal of local data to try to take on Google Inc. The talks involve Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue, are the latest sign of Apple’s plans to more tightly integrate local services into the iPhone and iPad.

JAMES ARTHUR LEADS U.K. CHRISTMAS SINGLE CHART RACE AGAINST SIR PAUL, ROBBIE WILLIAMS, MEL C GROUP: UK “X Factor” winner James Arthur is ahead of an all-star Hillsborough tribute single in the race for the UK Christmas number one. Arthur’s ” Impossible” has sold 76,000 copies so far this week, according to the Official Charts Company. That leads “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” by The Justice Collective, featuring Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams and Mel C, by 3,000 copies. That song is still the bookmakers’ favorite to be the festive number one. Official Charts Company’s Martin Talbot said: that “after just two days of sales [the race] exceptionally tight.”

PATTI SMITH REVEALS PLANS FOR SEQUEL TO MEMOIR ‘JUST KIDS’: After winning a National Book Award for Nonfiction for her 2010 memoir “Just Kids” — which focused on her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe — Patti Smith is planning a sequel that will flesh out and add to the story. Smith tells Billboard the next book “is in more of the ‘Just Kids’ vein and even in the similar time period, but shifts more to family, Fred (Smith, theMC5 guitarist and her late husband), music. So it’s a different perspective. ‘Just Kids’ was very focused on Robert and my relationship with Robert and wanting to be an artist, and the next book will be more, perhaps, music-based.”

THISWEEKIN CLOSING, BUT TOPSPIN CEO IAN ROGERS SAYS HE’LL CONTINUE THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: On Friday Jason Calacanis announced the impending shutdown of the ThisWeekIn video podcast series. But Topspin CEO Ian Rogers has confirmed that This Week in Music will be resurrected in a more occasional form. Though the series never gained serious traction, the archived videos remain and offer a rich selection of interviews from music industry figures. ALLAN RINDE, CASHBOX EDITOR, COLUMBIA EXEC, GENGHIS COHEN OWNER, RIP: Allan Rinde, a former publicist, West Coast Editor of Cashbox, head of West Coast A&R at Columbia, where he was behind Billy Joel’s first hit, “Piano Man,” and the man who helped break the Jesus Christ Superstar album, died on
Friday from a heart attack. Rinde was probably best known as the owner of L.A.’s Genghis Cohen restaurant on Fairfax, which became a live showcase for many acts and a celebrity hangout over the years. There will be a memorial event for him at the eatery, which he sold several years ago.
