While we’d all love red carpets to be filled with stunning fashion-forward looks and perfectly tailored suits, the truth is that most red carpets are a bit of a mixed bag. Sure, some looks might be absolutely stunning, worthy of even getting a repost on Instagram, but others might leave fans upset or scratching their heads.
Just this year, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Emily Blunt and Emma Stone have all rocked looks on red carpets that weren’t unanimously loved. After all, it’s hard to forget our reaction to seeing Kardashian walk up the Met Gala steps in a gorgeous silver gown and a gray sweater on top. Yeah, we didn’t totally get that either…

Heidi Klum was all smiles at the amfAR Gala Cannes in May in this peach fuzz-colored ruffled gown by Lever Couture. The look, however, was not everyone’s favorite, with some criticizing it for being shapeless and uninspired.
“Giving worm from the back but she kinda ate,” wrote one user on Twitter.
Bella Hadid at Cannes
As one of the most beautiful and successful supermodels in the world, Bella Hadid can look drop-dead gorgeous in any look. But, when she wore this sheer look at the The Apprentice premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, fans were unimpressed. To many the nudity and the length of the dress just weren’t appropriate for such a prestigious red carpet.
“Not for the red carpet of Cannes! Does she know where she is?” commented one user on Instagram. “Bella is gorgeous but this look for this event feels insecure and trying too hard to keep attention for all the wrong reasons,” wrote another.
Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala
Kim Kardashian left fans scratching their heads at the 2024 Met Gala in this Maison Margiela Couture silver gown with leaf-shaped chainmail and a gray shawl. After all, while she looked beautiful, and her waist was so cinched it was kind of unbelievable, everyone kept asking themselves, “Why did she wear the sweater on top?”
Explaining it to Vogue, Kardashian said the ensemble represented “the wildest night of my life in a garden,” and after her fun romp, she grabbed her “boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work. And my hair’s all messed up.”
Jennifer Lopez at the Met Gala
Jennifer Lopez looked like her usual stunning self at the 2024 Met Gala in this bedazzled Schiaparelli gown. But, considering she was one of the night’s star-studded hosts, fans were expecting more.
“Not that I had high expectations for her, but as co-chair, I was kind of excited to see her use this theme and have a bit of a moment but this is the same exact silhouette and glam we see on her constantly. I’m just so sad about it ??,” wrote one fan on Instagram. “Stunning dress but starting to think either I don’t understand the theme or none of these ppl do ??,” wrote another.
Elsa Pataky & Chris Hemsworth at the Met Gala
The same goes for Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth at the 2024 Met Gala. Did they look beautiful? Sure! Did it feel like they made the effort as co-chairs? Not really.
“This is already bad for a man but for a man that is co-chair??” questioned one user on Instagram over Hemsworth’s look. “oh nah not the basic suit,” another wrote.
Doja Cat at the Met Gala
Doja Cat left some fans furious when she showed up at the 2024 Met Gala in this custom Vetements wet t-shirt look.
“I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most-used flower. And it’s cotton,” she told Entertainment Tonight on her look. “I wanted to do a white T-shirt, also because a white T-shirt is timeless. And it felt very poetic to choose this.”
Online, fans had different reactions. “I don’t hate it!!! it’s her, it’s costumey, it’s on theme!” wrote one user. “She still thinks that this is shocking,” wrote another. “No mama, it’s just bad taste and ridiculousness.”
Emily Blunt at the Oscars
For many fans, Emily Blunt’s Schiaparelli look at the 2024 Oscars was quite a disappointment, so much so that even Blunt’s stylist had to defend the look. The dress, which featured structured floating shoulders, also had silver sequins in the shape of underwear.
“WHY ???????? Seriously why ??,” wrote one user on Instagram. “She is so beautiful but the details that outline underwear are not flattering.”
Some rare fans, however, looked this out-of-the-box look on her. “I LOVE THIS!!” wrote another commenter. “finally a good look for her!! i dont understand the hate in the comments. This look is so different for her, so fashion forward. LOVE.”
Emma Stone at the Oscars
Emma Stone, who ended up taking the Best Actress Oscar that night, also raised some eyebrows with her look. The mint green color, the peplum and the dress malfunction when she won her award were all up for criticism.
“Design is ok but let’s be frank: that color make her look like she is wearing a tablecloth,” wrote one user on Instagram. “The color is stunning and makeup and hair are great wish the bottom was just a fit and flat or ball gown,” wrote another. “The peplum feels very 2014.”
Paris Jackson at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars Viewing Party
Paris Jackson caused quite a stir when she Elton John AIDS Foundation 2024 Oscars Viewing Party in this mesh Giambattista Valli dress with ultra-high slits. And while some fans weren’t fans of the look, especially just how sheer it was, Jackson looked undeniably beautiful.
“When will this massive nudity dress trend stop?” asked one user on Instagram. “Usually hate sheer but she’s rocking it!” wrote another.
Ali Wong at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
Ali Wong, who won major awards all throughout awards show season for her role in Beef, really went all out at the 2024 SAG Awards in this black and white Iris Van Herpen gown. And while some applauded her for the drama, others just couldn’t get behind the look.
“I love iris van herpen but who thought this was a good idea? ?? what a waste of a gorgeous dress,” wrote one user. “Great dress, but needed different hair, make-up, earrings and glasses,” wrote another.
Billie Eilish at the SAG Awards
Also at the SAG Awards, Billie Eilish got some hate for dressing too casually for the red carpet in this Vivienne Westwood look. Others, on the other hand, applauded her for sticking to her signature style.
“I love her but it wouldn’t kill her to dress for the occasion,” wrote one Instagram user. “not to everybody’s taste but I totally get it. it’s kinda like a GenZ version of Dianne Keaton,” wrote an Eilish fan. “I’m glad Billie returned to form.
Anya Taylor-Joy at ‘Dune: Part Two’ Premiere
Anya Taylor-Joy got quite a lot of people riled up when she wore this white custom Christian Dior gown and matching headscarf to the Dune: Part Two premiere in February. While some praised the actress for the elegant and minimalistic look, others accused the look of attempting to “cosplay as Muslim women,” per The Independent.
“Is this a special “Ramadan Edition”? ????” one user wrote on Instagram. “This is like some Mary Magdalene thing??” questioned another. “I don’t hate it I’m just processing.”
Emma Stone at the EE BAFTA
Another Emma Stone look that received mixed reviews was this orange custom Louis Vuitton with a billowing one-shoulder puff sleeve.
“I love this ?? people are hating? How? It’s the perfect Bella/ poor things recreation, plus the color looks good on her skin,” wrote on reviewer on Instagram. “This looks like a prom dress you find on the clearance rack in June ??,” wrote another. Ouch!

Taylor Swift has millions of fans applauding her every move, but this white strapless Schiaparelli dress with black gloves at the 2024 Grammys wasn’t a slam dunk, even for the biggest Swifties.
“It’s the hair, the gloves and the over abundance of necklaces. It’s all too much,” wrote one user on Instagram. “The dress is so elegant but everything else is distracting from it:/.” “One step forward (the dress),” another wrote. “2 steps back (the hair and overall styling).”
Miley Cyrus at the Grammy Awards
Also at the Grammy Awards, Miley Cyrus showed up in quite a head-turning look in this skin-baring custom Maison Margiela mesh dress.
Among her fans, reactions were quite mixed. “If anyone can pull this look off it’s HER!” one user wrote on Instagram. “Gorgeous piece but I kinda wish she wore something else ??,” another admitted.
“I’m torn about it but it’s gorgeous at the same time?” another questioned. We’re not sure if they’ve made up their mind yet.

As we all know, Margot Robbie took the Barbie theme to heart during her press tour for the movie. At the 2024 Golden Globes, however, her look, which included this sequined custom Armani Privé gown and ruffled shawl, didn’t quite hit the mark for some fans.
“It’s too camp for me. She’s so gorgeous and there are thousands of better dresses that could have conveyed Barbie better,” wrote one user. “I know exactly what Barbie this is,” wrote another, referring to the Superstar Barbie Robbie was emulating. “?? loveeeee!”
