‘Motherland’ Spinoff ‘Amandaland’ Set At BBC
The BBC’s Motherland universe is living on with a spin-off following a post-divorce Amanda.
One of Sharon Horgan’s hit show’s most popular characters, Amandaland will follow the protagonist (Lucy Punch) after her divorce, who has had to downsize and up sticks to South Harlesden, or as the Estate Agent calls it, SoHa.

Featuring her mother Felicity, played by British acting icon Joanna Lumley, Amanda has to try and get her head around raising teenagers, dealing with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety. After a brief spell of freedom, Anne (Philippa Dunne) is sucked back into being Amanda’s minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children’s new school.
Motherland, which starred the likes of Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan and Paul Ready, ended earlier this year after three seasons. A U.S. remake from Ellie Kemper was in the works but was scrapped by ABC last year.
“We’re delighted to be working with the BBC and with this incredible cast,” said Horgan, who created the show with Graham Linehan, Helen Serafinowicz and Holly Walsh. “Motherland took off in a way that none of us were expecting and it’s just so exciting that we get to continue to make this next chapter of parenthood and friendship.”
Amandaland is written by Walsh (Motherland, The Other One, Dead Boss), Serafinowicz (Motherland, Nova Jones) and Barunka O’Shaughnessy (Breeders, Trying, Motherland). It is a Merman production and was commissioned by Tanya Qureshi, Head of Comedy at the BBC. EPs for Merman are Horgan, Clelia Mountford, Serafinowicz, O’Shaughnessy and Walsh. Lionsgate distributes the series worldwide.
