Movie thriller shot in Southport with a big-name cast drops a trailer and release date
A darkly comic crime thriller with a big-name cast that shot in Southport in 2022 has dropped a trailer and announced a release date.
"Greedy People," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("Inception," "500 Days of Summer") and Himesh Patel ("Yesterday"), which shot under the titles "Providence" and "The Problem with Providence," will be released by Lionsgate into theaters nationwide on Aug. 23.
In the movie, the Brunswick County town of Southport plays Providence, South Carolina, population 1,592.
As the trailer opens, Gordon-Levitt, playing a Southern-accented police officer, tells a new hire played by Patel that, "This is Providence, man. Nothing happens here."
Then, Patel's character accidentally kills a housewife played by former porn star Traci Lords, he and Gordon-Levitt's cop find a big bag of money, and things go sideways as people in the town get drawn into a scheme to conceal the cash.
"You can know that you're not good," says a character played by the comic and actor Jim Gaffigan, rendered nearly unrecognizable by a flowing brown wig. "Which is better than believing you are."
Throughout the trailer, scenes in downtown Southport and the waterfront can be seen.
"Greedy People" is directed by Potsy Ponciroli, best known for the Western "Old Henry," from a script by Mike Vukadinovich (Showtime's "Kidding").
The cast also includes Lily James ("Baby Driver," "The Iron Claw"), Uzo Aduba ("Orange is the New Black," Wilmington-shot "The Supremes at Earls' All You Can Eat"), Tim Blake Nelson ("O Brother, Where Art Thou?") and Simon Rex ("Red Rocket").
