MOVIES: What you need to know about “The Razor’s Edge” filming locally

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Police blockades shut down the 13th Street Bridge; boom mics and cameras lined the street near Banks Food Hall. The crew of “The Razor’s Edge” was hard at work in the first week of filming for the movie set to star Hollywood A-listers.

For roughly the next two weeks, Columbus sites are transforming into “New Jersey” and “Brazil” for the movie starring James Franco and Tommy Lee Jones. Actor and producer Alexander Kane, a Georgia-native, called the city a “filmmaker haven.”

“It kinda has everything you need: great lodging, great people, you know. It’s fairly cheap to shoot here,” said Kane, who is filming in Columbus for the first time. He added community support “makes it easy to make movies in a spot.”

“Razor’s Edge” is about a former Army Ranger-turned-hitman with PTSD who decides he no longer wants to stay in that life, according to Kane. The character, played by James Franco, “must take on a final dangerous job while evading a ruthless assassin,” states a plot summary on IMDb.

UPDATE: ‘Razor’s Edge’ filming leads to temporary shutdowns in Columbus

While “Razor’s Edge” filming will wrap in a few weeks, Kane says his Workhorse Cinema team has several upcoming productions which will be filmed in Columbus throughout the fall, wrapping at the end of the year.

Kane said he and he team aim to keep filming as “minimally invasive” as possible. The goal is to help communities Workhorse Cinema uses for filming, not take away from local business prospects or recreation.

Another important aspect on Workhorse Cinema sets is a sense of family. Kane held his daughter as he spoke with WRBL, exemplifying a mentality which prioritizes cast, crew and community.

He said he “handcrafted” his movie to allow for this type of interconnection. It was a non-negotiable for Kane, who co-founded Workhorse Cinemas out of Fitzgerald, Ga.

“That’s one thing that I can say I’m very proud of. I did it with my family since the beginning. As a father of six kids, I don’t have time to put career over family and so my family is with me on every set,” Kane said.

The crew onset get’s the same treatment. Kane said, “We’re a very family-oriented group and coming from rural Georgia, and rural America, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Although this is the first movie Workhorse Cinema has filmed in Columbus, Kane said the team will be back multiple times before the end of the year.

The production company has plans to shoot action-, drama- and rom-com films locally over the next months.
