In the follow-up movie, Monk, a brilliant San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder, returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
The movie is created, written and executive produced by the original series creative team, Andy Breckman. David Hoberman, Randy Zisk, who also directs, and Shalhoub also executive produce. The studio behind the movie is UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.
“It’s been twelve years since the world has seen a fresh installment of Monk. The world has changed mightily in those intervening years and Monk 2023 reflects the changing world, said Breckman, Hoberman and Zisk in a statement.
We’re so delighted to have made a movie version of Monk, and we are thrilled that every one of our stars were so enthusiastic about coming back. But in coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy. Mr Monk’s Last Case is a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming, and has something to say about the human condition. And it will be both familiar and surprising.”
Monk launched on USA in 2002 and ran for 125 episodes over eight seasons, with the series finale breaking ratings records as the most-watched cable drama at that time in 2009.
The series was a game changer for USA. It ushered in the entire Blue Sky brand that catapulted the network to the top of the cable ratings with a string of hits that included Psych, Royal Pains, White Collar, Burn Notice and Suits.
