‘Deadpool 2’ Stunt Death Investigation Finds Multiple Safety Violations

An investigation into the motorcycle crash that killed a stuntwoman during the filming of “Deadpool 2” found that 20th Century Fox committed multiple safety code violations that contributed to the accident.

On August 14, 2017, stunt rider Joi Harris died while performing a stunt during “Deadpool 2” on location in Vancouver. The stunt involved driving a high-powered, 900cc Ducati motorcycle down a ramp on a flight of stairs, but Harris lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the side of a building.

The investigation’s report, which was released by WorkSafe BC on Wednesday, said that the Fox production made multiple safety errors, including not setting up barriers that would have prevented Harris from hitting the building and failing to allow Harris to wear a helmet.

The report also says that Fox did not properly assess the risks of the stunt being filmed and that Harris, a motorcycle racer who had never done stunt work prior to ‘Deadpool 2,’ had not been provided with proper new worker orientation.

WorkSafe BC says that it is now considering issuing an administrative penalty against Fox for its safety code violations.

A Fox spokesperson said the studio disputes some aspects of the WorkSafe report and noted that it has responded to Harris’ death by revising and enhancing its safety standards on set.

“Safety is our top priority, and while we respectfully disagree with some of the report’s findings, Fox thoroughly reviewed its stunt safety protocols immediately following the tragic accident and has revised and implemented enhanced safety procedures and enforcement,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Fox reached a settlement out of court with Harris’ family this past April.
