Multiple ties lead to interesting acceptance speeches at Critics' Choice Awards

Sometimes picking just one winner can be hard. No entity knows that better than the Critics’ Choice Awards. Ever since the organization’s first awards ceremony in 1996, in which Ed Harris and Kevin Spacey tied for Best Actor, the CCAs have had trouble handing out only one award per category.

This year Amy Adams (Sharp Objects) and Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora) tied for Best Actress in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series. And while traditionally each winner receives her awards separately, Adams insisted that they accept at the same time. This led to Adams’ thanking HBO, followed immediately by Arquette thanking the network’s rival Showtime.

Adams isn’t a stranger to CCA ties. In 2006, she (Junebug) tied with Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) for Best Supporting Actress.

Other categories produced ties this year, with Glenn Close and Lady Gaga both taking Best Actress. Close was happy to share the award, saying “I am so thrilled it’s a tie, I can’t tell you! I was thinking that … the world kind of pits us against each other in this profession. And I know from all the women in this category, and I think I can speak for all the women in this room, we celebrate each other.”

Gaga was also happy to share, saying, “My mother and Glenn are good friends. So I’m so happy that you won this this evening.”

The CCAs have now featured at least a dozen ties, but this is just the second time that there have been two ties in one night: In 1996, A Bug’s Life and Prince of Egypt tied for Best Animated Feature, and Joan Allen (Pleasantville) tied with Kathy Bates (Primary Colors) for Best Supporting Actress.

The Critics’ Choice Awards aired Sunday at 7 p.m. on CW.
