Munjya, the eagerly anticipated horror-comedy featuring Sharvari Wagh, is gearing up to hit theaters on June 7, 2024. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and written by Niren Bhatt, this film is the fourth installment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe, following the success of Stree (2018), Roohi (2021), and Bhediya (2022).

The upcoming project explores a unique folklore-based story, blending horror with humor. The makers have promised a fresh and one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. So, this article will look at all the details regarding the forthcoming title, from plot to OTT release.

Munjya release date, cast, plot & more

Ever since its announcement on May 21, 2024, fans have been eagerly anticipating for the theatrical release of Sharvari Wagh’s Munjya. As mentioned earlier, the film is slated to release this upcoming Friday.

The story centers around Munjya, a small yet terrifying ghost who appears only to the protagonist, Bittu. Played by Abhay Verma, he is an awkward young man with glasses. The recently released trailer gave a sneak peek into what the film is going to be all about.

It begins with introducing a place called Chetukwadi which is believed to be cursed. This specifically includes the tree where Munjya’s ashes are buried. He was a boy who wanted to marry a girl named Munni but he passed away too soon.

Since then, he is seen to wait for his descendants to help him fulfill his last wish. The moment Abhay Verma’s character comes across the tree, the ghost of Munjya starts following him everywhere and tormenting him. His character is akin to Betaal from the classic Indian tale of Vikram and Betaal.

The people associated with him soon after understand Munjya is the one responsible for his particular behavior. Hence, they learn about the history behind the ghost and find his natal village. However, Bittu’s mother warns against visiting that place, hinting at some foul play that happened the last time they were there. The rest will be revealed once the film hits the silver screen.

More details on Sharvari Wagh’s upcoming movie

Apart from Abhay Verma, the film boasts a stellar cast including Sharvari Wagh, Mona Singh, and Sathyaraj. Taran Singh, Suhas Joshi, Bhagyashree Limaye, and Ajay Purkar round up the ensemble.

Munjya has been awarded a U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), with no cuts required. The final runtime is 123 minutes, which translates to 2 hours and 3 minutes.

For those wondering about Munjya’s OTT release details, the makers have not announced the official streaming partner. However, according to recent reports, after its theatrical release, Munjya could be available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. In addition, the OTT release date depends on the film’s box office performance. So, it is expected to be released approximately two months later.

Fans eagerly await Munjya’s release. Sharing a similar sentiment, Abhay Verma, the film’s lead actor, recently shared his excitement for the upcoming release. He exclaimed, “To be a part of something that hasn’t happened before in Bollywood itself makes it special for me. You always want to be a part of love stories in Bollywood and I’m extremely grateful to Lord Ganesha for a love story this wicked yet loving!”

Writer Niren Bhatt explains what makes Munjya a unique film, “In a man’s life, there are traditionally four stages: Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha, and Sannyasa. The Upanayan or Thread Ceremony marks the initiation into the student phase. If a man dies unmarried after his munja but before his Sod Munja, he becomes a Munjya: a spirit residing in peepal trees or near wells.”

Fans eager to experience this horror comedy laced with folklore in Munjya must wait until June 7, 2024 to watch it in theaters.
