'Murphy Brown' slams Sarah Sanders the day after confrontational press briefing

Murphy Brown took a big swing at Sarah Sanders on Thursday night. Frustrated by the lack of transparency in Donald Trump’s administration, Murphy Brown visited a White House press briefing to give the Trump administration’s mouthpiece a piece of her mind.

Using stock footage, the producers were able to construct a confrontation. Brown told Sanders, “The role of the White House press secretary is to create transparency in the government and tell the American people the truth, but that’s not what happens in this room.”

After providing examples of Trump contradicting himself, such as the purpose of meeting with Russians in Trump Tower and the handling of family separations at the border, Brown said, “It all comes down to the same thing: Why do you lie?”

Sanders’s reply, again from stock footage, was, “I think that’s an absolutely ridiculous question.” It wouldn’t seem ridiculous, given that the day before the show aired, CNN correspondent Jim Acosta and Sarah Sanders accused each other of not telling the truth.

Though the episode had been shots weeks before that incident, it highlights the prevalence of Trump’s war on the media and “fake news.”

Murphy Brown airs Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. on CBS.
