Naomi Campbell, Solange Knowles, Tracee Ellis Ross & More Toast Harper’s Bazaar Icons Issue

The Harper’s Bazaar Icons party has shed its past of black tie-clad drama at The Plaza, where Nicki Minaj and Cardi B got into a fight in 2018 and Kanye West delivered an onstage rant in 2016. Now, the event, which celebrates the magazine’s Icons issue (the September issue), is a more restrained and relaxed affair. On Wednesday evening, the 2024 Icons issue cover star Naomi Campbell was toasted with a gathering at Le Veau d’Or, which is the newly reopened restaurant of Bazaar editor in chief Samira Nasr’s brother, Riad Nasr.

“I’ve been at this for four years and there have been some people that have been exceptionally supportive of that, from photographers to talent to houses, and I just wanted to bring together that small community that have supported me for something intimate that didn’t feel so impersonal,” Nasr said, dressed in ivory Phoebe Philo, from inside the restaurant.

Those guests included Campbell, of course, as well as Solange Knowles, Natasha Lyonne, Tracee Ellis Ross, Martha Stewart, Ashley Graham, Amy Sherald, Thelma Golden, Michael Kors, Willy Chavarria, Fran Lebowitz, Gabriela Hearst, Stuart Vevers, Richie Shazam, Paloma Elsesser, Precious Lee, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, Christopher John Rogers, Dara, Lucky Blue Smith and Nara Smith.

Vevers and Hearst caught up briefly before the Coach designer slipped out around 7:30, as Hearst headed further into the party (one of them has a collection to show this NYFW, while the other can relax until Paris). Graham sashayed to the beat of the music after posing for photos, making a beeline for TikTok star Nara Smith.

“I’m obsessed with you!” Smith told her. “Same,” Graham replied. “Same.”

Campbell arrived during the latter half of the event, though no one dared remark on her tardiness. The night prior, she’d been honored with the Icon award at Harlem’s Fashion Row, which Anna Wintour was due to present to her. Instead, Wintour left to head to the U.S. Open and Campbell told the room she preferred Nasr, who ended up presenting her the award at the last minute.

“I was asked to do something and I did it. She’s our icon, last night was her night, and I’m just sorry I wasn’t able to prepare something for her,” Nasr said of the incident. “Anna [Wintour] spoke beautifully. I feel like it’s sort of taken on a life of its own today. I’m just glad I was able to hopefully be part of [Campbell] feeling celebrated.”
