Natalie Portman’s Complete Dating History
Natalie Portman recently separated from her husband Benjamin Millepied, with whom she shares two children. The former couple were together for over a decade, marrying in 2012 after meeting on the set of Black Swan.
Now that the actress is single again, fans are curious what her next romantic era will be like. If it’s anything like her pre-marriage life, Portman is in for something exciting. The A-list actress dated quite a few well-known entertainment figures before settling down.
Here’s a look back at her full dating history.
Jake Gyllenhaal
Though Portman was often seen on the arms of her past partners, she always managed to keep the more intimate details of her love life private. It is believed, according to E!, that she and actor Jake Gyllenhaal started dating sometime in 2002. They then split before reconnecting in 2006, when they were seen on a date in New York City. It’s not clear how long that lasted, but she was romantically connected to other people in that time period, so it may have been casual.
Whatever happened, they seem to have remained on good terms. The pair starred in the 2009 psychological drama Brothers, and Gyllenhaal presented her with the Desert Palm Achievement Award in 2011. He joked on stage, “She’s a vegan, which makes it really frustrating when you’re picking a place to eat.”
He then called her “the Audrey Hepburn of our generation. She’s graceful, has amazing eyebrows, and is talented, really short, funny, smart, dedicated, incredibly kind, and Jewish!”
Gael Garcia Bernal
Between 2003 and 2007, Portman was seen with Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal off-and-on. Quién reported that they met at an Oscars after-party. They split but got back together again. Remezcla reports that way back in 2006, an eyewitness claimed to have seen them enjoying some PDA together. The source said, “They put on quite a show. They were all over each other all night. They did not care who saw; they had eyes only for themselves. We couldn’t believe it.”
They were also spotted together at the Berlin International Film Festival that year and then at the U.S Open.
In 2007, Lainey Gossip reported they spent time together at the Vanity Fair party.
“At one I’m told she was complaining about her shoulder, he rubbed it, not in a pervy way but in the comfortable way between two people extremely comfortable with each other,” the gossip columnist wrote. “Later on, she leaned over and sipped from his drink, wrapping her hand around his and bringing it to her mouth.”
Nathan Bogle
In September 2007, Portman was spotted at the U.S. Open in New York City with Rag & Bone founder Nathan Bogle. He had recently left the company because of “creative differences.”
Devendra Banhart
Musician Devendra Banhart met Portman in 2008 when she starred in the music video for his song “Carmensita.” The pair were often seen around New York City that year, like in this photo of them enjoying a walk and coffee. They broke up later that same year. According to InStyle, sources said they parted ways because Portman was a “free spirit” and “complicated,” but took her career seriously.
Benjamin Millepied
In 2009, Portman learned some ballet from dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied so she could star in Darren Aronofsky’s hit film Black Swan. Sparks flew, and they soon started dating. She won an Oscar for the role in 2011, and said during her acceptance speech, “To my beautiful love, Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed the film and has now given me my most important role of my life.”
Portman was already pregnant with their son, Aleph, and they would welcome their daughter, Amalia, in 2017. In August 2023, it was rumored the couple were struggling, and they ultimately decided to separate after 11 years of marriage. In July 2023, Portman filed for divorce, and it was finalized in March 2024.
