Since 1985, the world of Studio Ghibli has been full of many fantastical things, including magic, wonder and anthropomorphic animals. The Japanese animation studio, founded by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, is best known for its award-winning features, signature style and recurrent storytelling themes.
Of the top 10 highest grossing anime movies in Japan, five are from Studio Ghibli, with "Spirited Away" holding second place, grossing 31.68 billion yen in Japan.
In its nearly 40 years of operation, Studio Ghibli has released many works, including a lengthy catalogue of feature films. The latest from the animation company "The Boy and the Heron" hit theaters in Japan on July 14, 2023.

How many Studio Ghibli movies are there in total?
There are 23 feature films that have been produced by Studio Ghibli. However, there are 24 feature films in total that have been animated by the production company.
Though it was produced under the animation company Topcraft, "Nausica? of the Valley of the Wind" is a Studio Ghibli film, having been directed by Miyazaki and produced by Takahata. Topcraft went bankrupt in 1985 after the release of the film, and the company dissolved. Takahata, Miyazaki and Suzuki then went on to form Studio Ghibli the same year.
"Grave of the Fireflies," released in 1988, was animated by Studio Ghibli but was produced by Shinchosha Publishing, the company which released the short story the movie is based on. Therefore, distribution rights for the film are not owned by Studio Ghibli, making it the only Ghibli film unavailable to stream on HBO Max.

Is Studio Ghibli still making movies?
In 2013, Miyazaki said he was done with filmmaking and later, Studio Ghibli shut down its production department for a period of time, according to a 2021 New York Times profile.
In 2017, however, it was announced Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki would be releasing a new project, "How Do You Live," based on the 1937 novel of the same name.
In 2020, another announcement of an additional Studio Ghibli film came — a computer-animated film "Earwig and the Witch." This was the first feature movie released completely by Studio Ghibli since 2014. "Earwig and the Witch" debuted at the Lumière Film Festival on Oct. 18, 2020, with a theatrical release in 2021.
On July 14, 2023, Miyazaki's latest film "The Boy and the Heron" released in Japan. An English-language of the movie is set to hit theater in the U.S. on Dec. 8. The English-dub includes voice acting from Robert Pattinson, Gemma Chan, Christian Bale, Florence Pugh and Willem Dafoe.

Where can I watch Studio Ghibli films?
If you're planning to have a Studio Ghibli movie marathon, here's what you need to know for streaming.
Nearly all of the Studio Ghibli feature films are available to stream on HBO Max in the U.S. This deal marked the first time the production company's films were ever licensed to a streaming platform, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Of the 24 feature movies in the Studio Ghibli catalogue, 23 are available for streaming for HBO Max subscribers, including the Academy Award-winning "Spirited Away." Additionally, two documentaries "The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness" and "Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki" are also watchable on the platform.
"Grave of the Fireflies" is the only film to not be included in the distribution rights on HBO Max. If you are looking to watch that film, it can be purchased on either Vudu or Apple TV for streaming.
