Nelly Furtado has announced her long-awaited seventh studio album, and as though that wasn’t already extremely [gay screaming] in and of itself, she’s also got some exciting collabs with queer artists in the works.
The “Promiscuous” singer announced the album, appropriately titled 7, in a black-and-white Instagram photo last week. The LP, which will mark her first record since 2017’s The Ride, will be released on September 20. In the caption to her post, she explained the process behind the album, which might explain why it took so long for us to get some new music: “I made 400-500 pieces of music in 4 years,” she said.
“My ADHD doesn’t always allow for me to organize creations in a methodical way so it’s hard to explain how we have chosen 14 songs that magically rose to the top of the heap,” the singer continued. “Phew — they come together just by nature of being in the same collection, 7, kind of like random seashells that may be similar but not at all alike.”
Furtado previously teased some details about 7 in a May interview with Gay Times, including her emerging conviction that “I really think I’m serving.” She also revealed that Toronto drag queen Tynomi Banks was one of the features on the album, saying, “She’s very talented. You’ve only just seen the beginning of Tynomi Banks.”
That isn’t the only queer collab in store for 7, though. In May, Furtado released the single “Love Bites,” featuring bisexual singer Tove Lo and songwriter SG Lewis. According to the tracklist on Genius, queer R&B artist Charlotte Day Wilson will also be featured on a song called “All Comes Back.”
While the full track list is not yet officially available, two songs on the album are already available to stream. Chappell Roan and Charli XCX might be the reigning queens of this summer’s pop music landscape, but once September rolls around we look forward to a very Nelly Furtado Fall.
