Netflix Data Dump: Spanish-Language Titles Soar As ‘Berlin’, ‘The Asunta Case’ & ‘Society Of The Snow’ Cut Through

Netflix’s all-out assault on the Spanish-language content market is paying off.

The latest Netflix ‘What We Watched’ data dump — or ‘engagement report’ in the streamer’s lexicon — shows seven Spanish-language TV shows, including Money Heist spin-off Berlin, were in the 100 most-watched for the January to June period this year. A further three films made the top 100 in that chart, including Society of the Snow (aka La Sociedad de la Niece) at number three with 103.8 million views.

Netflix has made Spanish-language content, and specifically originals produced out of its huge studios just outside of Spain’s capital Madrid, a major priority in the battle for international streaming subscribers. The strategy appears to be paying off when comparing this latest data set with previous incarnations.

Berlin, which stars Pedro Alonso in the titlular role as a master thief, was the ninth-most-watched TV show with 48.5 million views. The show, a prequel to earlier Netflix Spanish-language hit Money Heist, is from álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato. A second season was ordered earlier this year, and it’s now abundantly clear why.

The show was followed by limited series The Asunta Case (aka El Caso Asunta), which thirteenth with 30.7 million. The true crime drama comes from Bambú Producciones and follows the case of a Chinese-born Spanish girl whose body was found in Galicia in 2013.

Nicole Wallace’s Raising Voices (aka Ni Una Más) was nineteenth with 25.4 million and despite only releasing on May 31, suggests it could be a major hit for Netflix if momentum keeps up. Netflix Mexico’s action drama Bandidos, which we first told you about in April last year, was joint 53rd (16.1 million). Wrong Side of the Tracks season 3 (aka Entrevías), a Telecinco drama series that debuted in 2022, was 76th on 13.9 million, while another Mexican show, The Manny (aka El Ni?ero), was joint 91st on 13 million. Barcelona-set dog drama Iron Reign rounded out the Spanish Armada in 95th with 12.4 million.

The engagement report splits series by season, which means that longer-running shows that may have generated far more viewership won’t show up high in the rankings, putting Netflix originals at an advantage. In the case of its Spanish-language shows, only Wrong Side of the Tracks wasn’t a first season or miniseries. We didn’t include the Sofia Vegara-starring crime drama Griselda, which was the sixth-most-watched TV title overall, in our analysis as it came through U.S. writer and executive producer Eric Newman’s first-look deal with the streamer.

On the film side, Society of the Snow was third, followed by Through My Window 3: Looking at You (aka A Través de mi Ventana 3: A Través de tu Mirada) with 33.4 million views and The Courier (aka El Correo) in 63rd with 24.7 million views.

Netflix launched a Madrid office around the corner from its Tres Canto studio earlier this year, with Diego ávalos leading the Spanish content team. The streamer’s Mexican division has also been very active on the commissioning front.

The ‘What We Watched’ data report encompasses about 99% of Netflix’s entire catalog, meaning that there are thousands of titles. Check back in for more insights throughout the day.
