The return of a reality TV monster that’s sure to dominate social media conversation; Charlie and Nick’s blossoming romance; a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the NBA courtesy of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards; the latest gem from an action auteur; Tyler Perry’s first Netflix television drama and another helping espionage and drama from Keri Russell are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in October.

Coming in hot on Oct. 2 is the new season of Netflix’s reality dating show Love Is Blind. The seventh go around for the main franchise — the brand has now expanded into several country-specific versions — will see a fresh batch of singles heading into the pods, hoping to find love and marry their match, all within a worryingly compressed timeline. The show, which is still billed as a “social experiment,” has experienced some bad PR in recent seasons, and been the subject of several media exposes. However, Love Is Blind still remains immensely popular and a magnet for discussion on social media, and the new season is sure to dominate the conversation this month.

On Oct. 3, Netflix’s critically acclaimed British queer dramedy Heartstopper returns for a third season. The new season sees Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) deepen their unlikely friendship into romance, just as Charlie deals with some mental health challenges. The big news for season three is that Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey makes a guest appearance as Jack Maddox, Charlie’s celebrity crush. Heartstopper is an adaptation of Alice Oseman’s graphic novels about a pair of teenage boys falling for each another while at school, and quickly became a word-of-mouth hit for the streamer when it premiered in April 2022.

Netflix continues its foray into the world of sports with the launch of its hotly anticipated NBA docuseries Starting 5 on Oct. 9, a few weeks before the new season tips off. Set during the 2023–24 NBA season, the series follows current stars Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum and gives a behind the scenes look at their professional lives. Starting 5 comes from James and Maverick Carter’s Uninterrupted, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.

For fans of action films, a possible gem The Shadow Strays drops on Netflix on Oct. 17. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, the Indonesian film tells the story of Codename 13, a young assassin who finds herself suspended after a mission gone wrong. The movie comes from the filmmaker behind Netflix’s The Big 4 (2022) May the Devil Take You (2018) and The Night Comes for Us (2018) as well as the Shudder release May the Devil Take You Too (2020). Already highly rated by genre fans, Tjahjanto is set for bigger things and is behind the upcoming sequel to the Bob Odenkirk-led action movie Nobody.

Tyler Perry, the prolific writer, director and producer, debuts his first drama series for Netflix, Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black, this month. The series, per the streamer, follows two women who lead very different lives — one struggling to make a living after being kicked out by her mother, the other running a successful business — and find themselves entangled in each other’s worlds. The 16 one-hour episodes of Beauty in Black will release in two parts, with the first eight episodes dropping Oct. 24. A release date for part two has not yet been announced.

Launching on Oct. 31, The Diplomat also stars Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh and season two will see the addition of Allison Janney.
