Newest 'Dancing With the Stars' champion proves you don't have to be the best dancer
Radio personality Bobby Bones won the Season 27 “Mirror Ball” trophy on Dancing With the Stars, and the viewer reactions on Twitter ranged from confusion to full-blown frustration.
One of the main reasons fans were upset is that Bones has been one of the lowest-scoring dancers throughout the season. In fact, coming into the final night his highest judges’ score was three 8’s — and he only managed that twice. In addition, his victory came just a week after the season’s highest-scoring dancer, Juan Pablo Di Pace, was sent packing.

This finale was the perfect snapshot of the entire season. Milo Manheim and Evanna Lynch both got perfect scores for their two dances, while Alexis Ren had one perfect dance and one that received all 9’s. None of them won, however.

Bones appeared to bring his best dances to the finale, matching his season-high score of all 8’s on his first dance — then somehow managing a perfect score on a less-than-perfect freestyle dance. But his combined judges’ score was still the lowest of any of the finalists.

Since the final DWTS score is a combination of both the judges’ scores and viewer votes, the best dancer doesn’t automatically win. But in most seasons, the best dancer heading into the finals usually takes home the trophy. That was not the case this time, as Bones’s popularity was enough to offset his lower-scored dancing.
