Nick Cannon Details Insecurities In Being Married To “Alpha” Mariah Carey
When it comes to Nick Cannon, he may never stop discussing his ex-wife, Mariah Carey.
On Thursday (Oct. 24), the father of 12 appeared on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast and opened up about the insecurities that arose after he married Carey back in 2008.
“I didn’t actually really care what the world thought because the perception, you know; that is what it is. People are going to love you one day, hate you the next day,” Cannon, 44, explained. “I could care less about that […] But going to myself with that pressure of, ‘Who am I?’ I got married in my 20s—to the biggest star in the world. My trajectory was [at a certain level, but] she’s already in a different stratosphere.”
Admittedly, Cannon struggled with an identity crisis, but noted that he got “comfortable” with the Grammy winner’s luxurious lifestyle, joking about how “she’s got islands and I’m waking up at noon and people bringing me steaks on a platter.”
He added, “I would lay up at night thinking, like, ‘Is, is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?’ There’s nothing wrong with it.”
However, once they welcomed their twins, Monroe and Moroccan, Cannon had trouble with the “hierarchy” of their family. “I’m carrying a purse, the diaper bag and, you know, I’m standing on the corner like, ‘Wait.’ She’s rocking being the alpha,” Cannon shared, but agreed when the podcast’s host noted, “She deserves it.”
Yet, Cannon expressed, “I believe she needs a dude like that. I’m just not that dude.”
Cannon and Carey first met in 2005 and wed in 2008 after less than two months of dating. In 2014, they announced they were divorcing after six years of marriage. It was finalized in late 2016.
In the “Obsessed” singer’s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she shared that Cannon’s faith and ambition initially drew her to him. Of their divorce, she wrote, “Honestly, I think Nick and I could have worked it out between the two of us, but egos and emotions got inflamed (which can translate into many billable lawyer hours, and ultimately it did). It was tough. We both wanted to make sure everything was cool for our family. We will always be family, and we make it work.”
Over the years, Cannon has declared he’d never get remarried and even said back in August that he and Carey “belong together.” He called her a “gift from God” and credited her for keeping him alive. However, in September, he asserted to PEOPLE, “Yeah, she don’t want me. She’s moved on from my crazy antics.”
After their relationship, he went on to have 10 more children with five other women.
