Nicole Kidman & Naomi Watts' Friendship May Have Hit a Bumpy Patch After This Career Milestone

Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts’ friendship has endured for decades as they navigated Hollywood together from their Australian beginnings. Over the years, it wasn’t unusual to see them walking a red carpet together or showing up to support each other’s projects, but sources are claiming they’ve grown apart recently.

It doesn’t sound like it’s a rift, but more like two people whose lives have drifted in a different direction. A Closer Weekly insider thinks that the recent Emmy nominations didn’t help the situation either. Watts earned a nod for her role as Babe Paley in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans while Kidman was snubbed for her work in Expats in the Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category. “Competing for awards is always a dramatic and intense process for Naomi but being pitted against Nicole makes everything 10 times harder because of their decades of history together and especially because they were best friends from their early 20s on,” the Watts pal told the media outlet.

Their current friendship status seems to differ from the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala on Saturday, April 27 when Watts feted her longtime BFF. She gushed about the Oscar winner being “the most generous person” from the first time they met at a bikini audition in the ’80s. “She’s opened up her homes to me. She’s made me feel like part of her family. She was like the sister I’d never had,” Watts said. “She’s incredibly supportive of other women. For ten years, when I lived very much under the radar, she repeated to me, ‘One thing, Nay, one thing will change everything, I swear. Just hang in there.'” Kidman had faith in her friend all along — she believed that Hollywood would recognize her talent.

Kidman was also present at Watts and Billy Crudup’s June 8 Mexico City wedding ceremony one year after the official tied the knot. The Big Little Lies star sounded emotional about her bestie marrying the man of her dreams. “It was deeply memorable. It was just so beautiful to witness the marriage of Billy and Naomi,” Kidman told People. “And a first wedding for both of them, isn’t that crazy? So, there you go.”

So, it sounds like their friendship has only hit a temporary bump in the road. Kidman might be disappointed about not getting an Emmy nomination, but we have a feeling she will be rooting for Watts at the Primetime Emmys on Sept. 15.
