Nicolle Wallace says getting fired from 'The View' in 2015 felt 'personal': 'It's like being broken up with'
Five years after being cut from her co-hosting duties on The View, Nicolle Wallace says that her firing felt “like being broken up with.”
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the former communications director for George W. Bush, a former adviser to John McCain and current MSNBC host explained that the talk show was her introduction to the world of entertainment. Even while working for the show, she didn’t quite understand how the show was run.
“Being fired from a TV show where you think you’re kind of baring your soul feels personal because it is,” she said. “I think what I didn’t understand is: It really was a casting, and it was a casting they didn’t like.”
Wallace represented the Republican viewpoint during her one season on the daytime show, alongside Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie Perez and Rosie O’Donnell, sitting in the same seat as Meghan McCain today. And although Wallace said she “loved” working on The View, she expressed that there was tension with some of her co-hosts.
“I sought to make peace with Rosie O’Donnell and Rosie Perez,” she shared. “I had such a special friendship with Whoopi Goldberg.”
Wallace even recalled being shocked when Goldberg was the first to admit that Donald Trump would likely become president. “The first human being who I have ever heard say out loud, in the summer of 2015 — ‘[Trump] is going to be a president, guys,’” she said. “I remember whipping my head around and looking at her.”
Now, Wallace covers Trump’s administration on her daily program Deadline: White House and explained how she uses her insight from working for a former president to inform the way that she reports, despite being perceived herself as a Republican against Trump.
“I try to remember when these stories were written about my administration. And I think most of my sources, because of the nature of the presidency in which I worked, are former national security officials,” she explained. “But I never kind of sit on TV and try to just talk about the world from the viewpoint of a former Bush or McCain Republican, ever. And I wouldn’t obviously as someone covering the Biden administration.”
