Here’s what late-night TV had to say about Days 2 and 3 of the RNC in Milwaukee

The late-night television talk shows had much to say Wednesday night about the second and third days of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. But they didn't have a lot to say about Milwaukee.

The late-night hosts poked fun at JD Vance’s beard, the RNC hip-hop anthem “Trump Trump Baby” and the appearance of Babydog, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice’s charming, 60-pound bulldog.

But Milwaukee? You'd hardly know the RNC was in the city.

The only notable mention of Milwaukee was on "The Daily Show," which briefly mentioned the city in a recurring bit where correspondents reported “live” from Milwaukee. The punchline? None of "The Daily Show" crew was actually in Milwaukee.

More than halfway through the segment, host Ronny Chieng introduced correspondent Michael Kosta, who appeared to speak in front of a digital backdrop of Fiserv Forum, and asked him how things were going in Milwaukee.

“I know we canceled all our shows here this week, but I’m glad that I got to stay here in Milwaukee, which is where I am,” said Kosta.

On Sunday, following the assassination attempt targeting Trump in Pennsylvania, "The Daily Show" canceled plans to record its shows live in Milwaukee during the RNC, citing "logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee." Tuesday night on "The Daily Show," host Jon Stewart said the show's plans had changed because the place they planned to stage the show, the Marcus Performing Arts Center, had been shifted into the hard security perimeter. (A Journal Sentinel fact check found that he claim was wrong: The boundaries of the security perimeter had not changed after the shooting, and the Marcus Center was still in the soft security zone.)

In a later segment, during which Chieng, Jordan Keppler and Desi Lydic discussed Vance’s facial hair and qualifications to be Trump’s vice president, Keppler also appeared to be reporting from outside Fiserv Forum.

Vance’s beard also was a punchline on other late-night shows, which also mocked the "news" reported by other outlets that Vance would be the first major-party nominee with facial hair in 75 years.

On the winning appearance of Justice’s Babydog, Seth Meyers on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" joked, “Honestly, if Republicans had nominated Babydog, I’d be (expletive) torn.”

“Trump Trump Baby,” a Trumpified parody of Vanilla Ice’s hit "Ice Ice Baby," also provided fodder for humor. Antony Anderson, guest-hosting on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", commented: “Haven’t Donald Trump’s ears been through enough, though?” Anderson followed up the joke list of “MAGA rap groups” to anticipate: Run-R.N.C., Assault and Pepper, and Cypress Hillary’s Emails.

As the RNC approaches its final day today, late night shows’ segments on the RNC have seen consistently high viewership. Stephen Colbert’s coverage of RNC night three has racked up half a million views in less than 12 hours. Jon Stewart’s segment on the opening night of the convention has already reached 5.4 million views.

Stay tuned for how late-night TV will respond to today’s events, with Trump set to formally accept the Republican nomination for presidency. Some shows, including "The Daily Show," plan to air live after Trump's speech in Milwaukee.
