A defunct yet beloved NBA team will soon be the muse for a new sneaker release from Nike’s skateboarding line.
A Nike SB Dunk Low inspired by the Seattle Supersonics has been rumored for a while now, and a new product shot of a matching T-shirt seems to be indicative of an imminent release. Images of the shoes have also been shared on Instagram by @sbheadsbe and give fans a clear picture of what to expect when the shoes hit stores.
Using the team’s Space Needle-adorned 1995-2001 era jerseys for inspiration, this upcoming Nike SB Dunk Low “Seattle Supersonics” dons a “Fir/White/University Gold/Fire Red” colorway which uses a red leather base with dark green suede overlays. Much like the team’s uniforms, the gold shade is used sparingly, appearing around the border of the Swoosh and on the tongue and heel Nike branding.
To further tell the basketball backstory, the shoe’s tongue is constructed with a mesh material reminiscent of what’s used on jerseys and the Nike-branded heel tab is fully embroidered. A gum rubber outsole completes this throwback-inspired look.
Led by former NBA stars Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, the Supersonics were one of the most dominant Western Conference teams of the 1990s. In 2008, the team’s ownership group relocated and rebranded the team as the Oklahoma City Thunder. While the Thunder have been successful, many longtime fans and Seattle natives have long pined for the return of a professional basketball team.
While the “Seattle Supersonics” Nike SB Dunk Lows are still awaiting a confirmed release date, a Nike SB-branded T-shirt stylized in the Supersonics’ logo has already begun arriving at retailers. As of now, the “Seattle Supersonics” Nike SB Dunk Lows are expected to be released during holiday 2024 for a retail price of $125.
