Nikolaj Coster-Waldau weighs in on that 'Game of Thrones' valonqar theory
In “Eastwatch,” the latest episode of Game of Thrones, Cersei revealed to Jaime that she was pregnant, and he was the father. Fans immediately took to social media to try to figure out whether or not this was another one of Cersei’s lies.
The revelation also reignited a long-held theory involving that prophecy that the woods witch, Maggy the Frog, gave to young Cersei, way back in Season 5. Maggy tells Cersei that she’ll marry the king, and will be queen, until a younger queen casts her down, and she’ll have three children who will all die. Much of that has already come to pass, but in the book A Feast for Crows, there’s more to the prophecy. Maggy the Frog also states, “And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”
Valonqar is High Valyrian for little brother, and her whole life, Cersei assumed it was referring to Tyrion, which helped fuel her hatred for him. But many fans believe that the little brother who will end up killing Cersei is actually Jaime, her twin, who nonetheless was born shortly after her, technically making him her little brother by a few minutes.
In a recent interview with Bustle, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime, weighed in on the theory, saying, “I think it’s a great theory, but even if I did know, obviously I couldn’t share anything, but I think it’s a great theory. There’s a beautiful, poetic truth to it, so who knows?”
