Nine Inch Nails will contribute the music to the upcoming film Tron: Ares, with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross appearing onstage to make the announcement during the sequel’s presentation at the Disney’s D23 expo.

While Reznor and Ross have composed dozens of scores across film and television — including most recently Challengers — and have won Oscars for their work on The Social Network and Soul, Tron: Ares marks the first time their film work has been credited to Nine Inch Nails.

Tron: Ares, due out in October 2025, is the sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, which was notably scored by the now-defunct Daft Punk. The film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role from both the 1982 original Tron and the 2010 sequel.

After the cast appeared onstage and footage of Tron: Ares was shown to D23 attendees, a laser-cut title card revealed that Nine Inch Nails would provide the music for the film, and Reznor and Ross briefly appeared onstage following the announcement:

The score will also feature new songs by Nine Inch Nails in addition to the score, making it (as of now) the band’s first release since the instrumental LPs Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts arrived in 2020. The band hasn’t performed live since 2022.

After their uncharacteristically high-energy score for Challengers, Reznor and Ross are next set to score Luca Guadagnino’s William S. Burroughs adaptation Queer and the action film The Gorge before returning to “the Grid” with Tron: Ares.
