Will 9-1-1: Lone Star Be Renewed by ABC After FOX Cancellation?
On September 5, Deadline reported that 9-1-1: Lone Star will end with its upcoming fifth season on Fox.
Given that Fox canceled 9-1-1 last year after six seasons and it was picked up by ABC, it’s not that much of a stretch to believe that 9-1-1: Lone Star could follow a similar path. Fans are rallying for the show to be rescued with the hashtag #Save911LoneStar but their efforts may not pay off the way they hope.
Deadline reports, “Lone Star is not expected to jump to ABC, the new sister network of 9-1-1 franchise producer 20th TV which has renewed the flagship for an eighth season.” They note that another spinoff of 9-1-1 in a new location is a possibility on ABC, however, “with Las Vegas among potential cities rumored to follow Los Angeles (9-1-1) and Austin (9-1-1: Lone Star).”
At the time that 9-1-1 moved to ABC in May 2023, Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade said of the financial aspect of the series, “The economics weren’t going to pan out for this show for us.”
Fox TV Network President Michael Thorn commented on 9-1-1: Lone Star, sharing, “From the start, fans have followed the heroic and deeply moving stories of the men and women who make up Austin’s 126, so a huge thanks to one of the greatest creative teams in all of television — Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear — for creating one of the most action-packed dramas anywhere.”
Thorn added, “Now in our final season of the show, we’re set to give it the high-stakes send-off it deserves, complete with breathless rescues, insurmountable odds and relatable personal struggles, thanks to our incomparable, stellar cast led by Rob Lowe and Gina Torres.”

Lowe, who plays Captain Owen Strand, discussed the fate of 9-1-1: Lone Star in an August 1 interview with Variety. “We all went into it pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season, so that affected everything we did,” the actor said. “We wanted to really show everybody what is still possible in network television if people have the appetite to do it. It feels like it’s probably the end of an era of a certain type — well, it doesn’t feel like it. It is the end of an era of a certain type of show we once had an opportunity to make, and I think they’re great.”
He added, “We wanted to go out making our case for the value of shows like that, and I think we did a really good job. The stories that we were able to tell on a weekly basis in terms of the scope and scale — that’s probably the thing I’m the most proud of. They were truly like mini-movies every week.”
In a Reddit discussion about 9-1-1: Lone Star’s cancellation, fans shared their sadness over the news. “This has been coming for a while so it’s not a shock, but it’s still really sad,” one fan commented. “I loved this how, despite it’s flaws and I’ll miss most of the characters so much. I’m glad we get one final season to say goodbye.”
Another fan looked for a creative way to move some of the characters from Lone Star to a new 9-1-1 spinoff. “Another article mentions rumors of ABC doing another spinoff of 9-1-1 at a new location. I think this could actually work really well and could give us an excuse to keep a character or two from Lone Star. Like T.K. and Carlos move to New York and we get 9-1-1: Big Apple or something.”
The final season of 9-1-1: Lone Star premieres September 23 on Fox.
9-1-1: Lone Star is available to stream on Hulu.
