NYCC Video: Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy Revisit Their Intense, Intimate Series-Finale Moment
Fannibals, here’s something to sink your teeth into.
Hannibal stars Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen reunited for a panel at New York Comic Con Sunday to celebrate their gripping, gruesome drama with a large contingent of its very dedicated fans. Given that many of those fannibals long for an official confirmation of romance between Dancy’s Will and Mikkelsen’s Hannibal, the conversation soon turned to an intimate moment in the series’ finale.

For the uninitiated: Hannibal ran for three seasons on NBC and ended in August 2015 on a cliffhanger, with Dancy and Mikkelsen’s characters defeating the Red Dragon (aka Francis Dolarhyde), then embracing and plunging off a cliff. (Read a series-finale post mortem here.)
Mikkelsen has previously discussed how he’d considered having Hannibal kiss Will while filming the episode’s heightened final moments. On Sunday, he addressed exactly what he meant. “We got carried away, let’s put it that way,” he told the crowd during a conversation moderated by Nerdist’s Rotem Rusak. At the time of the finale, creator Bryan Fuller vowed that there’d be more of Hannibal and Will’s story in some form — “It’s not over until I’m dead, as far as I’m concerned,” he told TVLine — but also warned that “the fans are going to have to be very patient.”
As recently as 2023, Mikkelsen expressed his interest in revisiting the iconic Dr. Lecter, saying “There’s always a chance” for more of the cult-hit series. “It’s all about finding a home for it.” However, he added, time was not on the project’s side: “We can’t wait 20 years. But in the next couple of years, if somebody finds a home, I think we are all ready to take it up again.”
