Obama gets crushed by Colbert in 'waste basket-ball': 'I’ve lost my swag on Stephen Colbert'
Making another stop on the promotional tour for his new book, A Promised Land, former president Barack Obama joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Tuesday night where Colbert challenged him to a game of “waste basket-ball.” Colbert even came up with an idea to make it more interesting: If Colbert was to win, Obama would have to mention him in his next book. If Obama won, Colbert would donate money to Obama’s presidential library.
Obama was both trepidatious and over confident at the same time. At first he wondered if Colbert had spent all month practicing, but when Colbert asked Obama if he’d like to practice, Obama replied, “I don’t need practice shots. Against you?”
Obama also commented on the fact that Colbert’s balls of paper were wadded up tighter than the ones left for him.
But finally, they began to shoot. Just days before the election, Obama made headlines for draining a three point shot while campaigning for now President-Elect Joe Biden, then walking away saying, “That’s what I do.” But that’s not what he did on this day.
Colbert jumped out to a commanding lead. After making his third while Obama had yet to even make one, Colbert mimicked Obama, saying, “It’s what I do. It’s what I do.” After Colbert went up 4-0, Obama conceded, “Colbert, I’m getting crushed.” Colbert then proceeded to make four more in a row, going up 8-0,and Colbert was anything but gracious in victory.
“WOOOOOOO!” Colbert stood up and yelled. “I didn’t even hit one,” Obama said with his face in his hand. “How am I gonna live this down?”
Obama had one more shot to try to save a little bit of face but overshot the waste basket.
“You let me win,” Colbert said laughing. “No,” Obama replied. “That made this my favorite interview of all time,” Colbert said. “Yeah, yeah,” Obama responded. “I will never—I’ve lost my swag on Stephen Colbert.”
Colbert then ended the interview by thanking Obama for being president, garnering a thumbs up from Obama.
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
