‘Off to See the Wizard’: 5 Memorable Performances From ‘The Wiz’
“The Wiz” is an essential part of Black culture. It takes the classic “The Wizard of Oz” tale and gives it a soul and R&B vibe. I know people consider the original a classic, but “The Wiz” is a far more compelling story. Dorothy’s journey to finding her self-confidence, and in turn helping her new friends discover their true selves, has a substance not found in the O.G. Land of Oz.
The musical is so engrossing, it’s seen multiple productions and revivals through the years, including a 1978 film and a 2015 NBC live special. Its latest version is set to hit Broadway in March. As the show’s national tour performs previews in San Francisco and Los Angeles, we’re getting our first look at Emmy winner Wayne Brady as The Wiz.

Stephanie Mills - “Home”
We have to start with Stephanie Mills’ timeless version of “Home.” She’s been singing this song for nearly 50 years and she nails it every single time. If you’ve never seen her perform it live, I highly recommend it. 10 out of 10.
Michael Jackson - “You Can’t Win”
“You Can’t Win” feels like it was written specifically for MJ, but it was actually cut from the original production before it hit Broadway. When it was added back for the movie, Jackson made it a classic.
Mary J. Blige - “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News”
It’s hard for anyone to compete with the incomparable Mabel King as Evillene, but powerhouse singer Mary J. Blige came close in the 2015 NBC live production.
LaChanze - “Believe in Yourself” (Reprise)
In 2009, New York’s City Center revived “The Wiz” as part of its “Encores” series. In addition to Ashanti, Orlando Jones, Colman Domingo and Tichina Arnold, the star-studded cast featured Tony winner LaChanze bringing down the house as Glinda.
Nichelle Lewis - “Home”
The list of iconic actresses who’ve played Dorothy includes actual legends, so Nichelle Lewis has big shoes to fill. In a recent appearance on “The View,” she showed she’s up to the task.
