“I’m very out there to the world and I really let the fans in and I’ve built a tremendous bond with them,” Rubinstein announced the news in an interview with Hello! in November 2022. “But we wanted to hold on to a little bit of privacy, especially for something so intimate and so personal.”
Rubinstein’s personal news comes at a bittersweet time for the 9-1-1: Lone Star cast member, whose show is ending with its fifth and final season in January 2025. FOX announced that it had cancelled 9-1-1: Lone Star in September 2024, about a year after the network had cancelled the Lone Star’s mother series, 9-1-1, before 9-1-1‘s move to ABC. Rubinstein is an original cast member on 9-1-1: Lone Star and has played paramedic Tyler Kennedy “TK” Strand, the son of firefighter captain Owen Strand, since Season 1. TK is also one-half of 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s main couple — and one of the few LGBTQ+ couples currently on primetime — Tarlos. The other half is TK’s husband, police officer Carlos Reyes. The coupl got married in the Season 4 finale.
While Rubinstein is now a father to his own child, having has proven to be a contentious topic between TK and Carlos after TK learned in 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 4 that Carlos didn’t want to have his own children in “Carlos, since when did you not want to have kids?” TK asked Carlos, to which Carlos responded, “Since when did I say I did?”
TK continued, “I don’t know. I guess I assumed… How have we never had this conversation?” Carlos explained that he never brought up the topic because kids wasn’t something that he thought about, especially given how busy their first-responder jobs were. “But you love kids, Carlos,” TK said, to which Carlos responded, “I love other people’s kids.”
When TK continued to pressure Carlos about how much he loves children, Carlos explained that just wanted his relationship with TK to stay the two of them. “I just want us to have a chance to be us. There are still so many things I want to do with you. I want to hike the Great Wall with you. I want to sleep in in Tuscany with you,” Carlos said. “I don’t think we’re anywhere close to being ready for that level of responsibility. We’ve never even had a pet.”
When TK took Carlos’ comment as him thinking that he wasn’t going to be a good father, Carlos responded by telling TK, “I never said that. But what I do think is you’re going to make a fantastic husband.”
