Olympic Gymnast McKayla Maroney Denies Getting Lip Injections
Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney is unimpressed again – this time with rumors that she's had lip injections.
The 20-year-old athlete set the record straight about rumors of cosmetic procedures in an interview with Seventeen, denying that she's had any enhancements done.
The rumors started after a a new video about the last three gymnastics World Championships debuted on Saturday. Maroney is seen in interviews with her hair down and wearing makeup.
Maroney says the new look isn't surgical – it's just the effect of her face changing with age, and her new fascination with makeup and over-lining her lips. "Makeup and a camera can really make you look like a different person," she said.
"I think it freaks people out to see somebody change just a little bit," the California native explained. "I don't mean to freak anybody out. At the end of the day, I have changed. I can't blame anybody for saying, 'Oh, she changed!' You know, because I have. And that's OK."
"Growing up in the social media world, it's tough," she continued. "Your face changes, you get older, your face fills out, and you fall into liking makeup and different stuff like that. And for people saying that, for the most part – it would kind of hurt my feelings when you haven't done anything."

And while her 2012 Olympic teammates Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman are heading back for a second run at gold, Maroney retired in February due to injuries and to continue her acting career, starting with the new season of Superstore. And she's also trying her hand at music, telling the magazine she wants to be the female Drake.

But no matter how much she puts herself in the spotlight, Maroney says she still struggles with the comments coming from social media. Her interest in makeup has helped. "I was so young [in 2012] and I was not focused on what I looked like. I was focused on the gold medal. And now I'm just getting into entertainment and really looking at other girls who are wearing makeup," she said. "It's a thing now! I'm getting into fashion and I really enjoy it."
And as for those who continue to judge her? Maroney isn't concerned.

"You just kind of have to keep being yourself and move forward with what you love," she said, confidently. "I just haven't had anything to give to people, so they're almost just picking at anything that they can to find something to talk about me for. It's just one of those things right now and you just have to keep moving forward."
"It's good to keep evolving and growing. I think most people should be accepting with stuff like that, but you know, you can't force anybody into feeling a certain way. So for anybody who's judging it and not liking it, that's fine. Unfollow me. I don't really care," she says.
