For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."

I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace and you know how loved you are. Love you bro."

Louis Tomlinson also posted a message honoring his late bandmate, saying "For the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam."

"I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours , reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be."

Fans all around the world have also posted tributes to Payne, often with the One Direction song “Infinity” attached to it.

Liam Payne’s musical history

After appearing on the British singing competition show The X Factor solo in 2010, Payne was paired up with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson by the judges. The five of them became the widely successful boyband One Direction.

The band released five total albums, but the last one—Made in The A.M., was made without Malik because he decided to leave.

One Direction officially broke up in 2016 after all of its members decided to start their solo careers.

“The day the band ended, I was like, ‘Thank the Lord,'” Payne said in 2021. “I know a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying that, but I needed to stop, or it would [have] killed me.”

After leaving the band, Payne released an album entitled LP1 in 2019, and many successful singles like “Strip That Down” and “Teardrops”, the former of which was released earlier this year.

Liam Payne’s mental health struggles

Becoming a star at such a young age took a toll on Payne’s mental health, and in 2019 revealed, "I was [drunk] quite a lot of the time because there was no other way to get your head around what was going on. I mean, it was fun. We had an absolute blast, but there were certain parts of it where it just got a little bit toxic."

The singer did announce in July 2023 that he was six months sober after spending almost 100 days in rehab

"I just kind of feel like I've got more of a grip on life and everything that was getting away from me. I just feel like I've got more of a handle on it," said Payne. "I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself, actually, because I kind of became somebody who I didn't really recognize anymore. And I'm sure you guys didn't either. I was in bad shape up until that point and I was really happy to kind of put a stopper to life and work."

It remains unclear at this time when Payne broke his sobriety and if his struggles with addiction played a part in his death.

Payne was never married, but he does have a seven-year-old son named Bear Grey with his ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole.

“I had my son at a young age, and you think it will be a magical thing that you’re going to grow up one day into the person you’re supposed to be,” Payne said of being a young father. “But it took a lot to find my footing. I figured, Dad takes care of everyone. That’s what he does, so my thing was to cook.”

Cole did take the time to comment on Payne's death by writing on Instagram "Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again. What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days. It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future."

"I am begging you to consider what use some of these reports are serving, other than to cause further harm to everyone left behind picking up the pieces. Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them. Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last."
