'Only good thing that happened in 2020': Aly & AJ drop explicit 'Potential Breakup Song'
Pop duo Aly & AJ released a new explicit version of their hit "Potential Breakup Song" on Tuesday, which dropped in 2007.
This new version sounds much like the previous radio-friendly iteration – with edgier, profane lyrics. The pair teased the new release on social media; the song had apparently been gaining new fans on TikTok.
Fans of the group quickly offered their hot takes upon listening to the curse-filled update.
"The only good thing that happened in 2020 was getting the adult version of potential breakup song," Twitter user @ahhnuska wrote.
One user, @kels_wysong, pointed out the song wasn't actually all that explicit but that it didn't matter. "Aly and AJ added three (3) curse words to potential breakup song and yall are going wild for it... and you know what me too let’s go," they wrote.
Twitter users also posted many a meme in reference to the song.
"Aly and AJ re-recorded Potential Breakup Song and I’m about to go slash a man’s tires," @varunikask wrote.
And it even brought one fan to near tears.
"I (genuinely) want to cry," @MirandaMarih wrote. "Potential Breakup Song was such a big part of my good childhood memories. This explicit version is everything @alyandaj."
People were hyped even before the song's release.
"aly & aj could do hey jude but the beatles could never do potential breakup song," @brockus wrote on Dec. 22. @chunkyfila added: "therapy isn’t free but listening to potential breakup song by aly & aj on repeat is."
Aly & AJ put out a new single earlier this month called "Slow Dancing," shortly after the release of the compilation "We Don't Stop" on Nov. 30.
