‘The Originals’ Season 4 Finale Writer Michael Narducci Previews the Mikaelsons’ ‘Impossible Choice’
“Always and Forever” has been the Mikaelson family motto for a thousand years. But their deep-rooted bond is in danger of being torn apart to save one of their own.
In The Originals Season 4 finale, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) are willing to do whatever it takes to rescue their daughter, Hope (???), from the clutches of evil spirit the Hollow. “She smartly put herself into the child Hope because a) Hope will grow up to be an incredibly powerful witch in her own right,” writer and former showrunner Michael Narducci tells Yahoo TV. “And b) the Mikaelsons will never turn on their own child and she knows that she’s basically invulnerable to their attack by being inside this little girl. So she kind of smartly outmaneuvered them.”
To save Hope, witch Vincent comes up with a plan to split the Hollow and place each piece into the bodies of four Mikaelson siblings. But that means Klaus, Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Rebekah (Claire Holt), and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) will have to stay away from each other — for eternity. “This is an instance where the Mikaelsons are forced to ask themselves: Would they do the right thing for Hope and the world at large even if it meant saying that we’ve come to an end of our vow to protect one another as siblings as we have for the past thousand years?” Narducci explains. “The idea was always to put them in a dilemma where they had two impossible choices. One impossible choice is to sacrifice Hope and the other impossible choice is to say goodbye to one another.”
Originals fans don’t have to worry about a nail-biting cliffhanger; the Hollow storyline will have a definitive conclusion. But the finale also puts pieces into place for Season 5. “We always planned on telling the story of Season 4 as a single dramatic unit. You could begin at the beginning with the first episode and then end with the last episode and feel satisfied that you’ve seen a complete story,” he says, adding that Julie Plec and the writers are already working on the next season.
“One of the running ideas we’ve always said is, don’t ever believe you’ve seen the last of anything. And so I have a sneaking suspicion that the status quo at the end of the season will not be the eternal status quo,” Narducci teases. “And I think part of the fun of Season 5 will be finding out what happens next.”
