Oscar odds update: ‘A Complete Unknown’ rises towards likely nominations including Best Picture
Due for release on Christmas Day from Searchlight Pictures, the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” impressed Oscar watchers with its trailer enough that it has steadily risen in our odds, and as of this writing it’s in position for nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor (Timothee Chalamet), with Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton) and Best Adapted Screenplay looking like strong possibilities as well.

As of this writing “A Complete Unknown” has entered the top 10 in our Best Picture odds, making it a likely nominee for the time being. Based on the 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric!,” the film is directed by James Mangold, who previously earned Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay (2017’s “Logan”) and Best Picture (2019’s “Ford v Ferrari“). But the most relevant title to consider from his filmography may be “Walk the Line,” the 2005 film about country legends Johnny Cash and June Carter that won Reese Witherspoon her Best Actress Oscar for playing the latter singer. That film received five nominations overall. It wasn’t up for Best Picture, but that was before the category expanded; had there been 10 slots as there are now, there’s a good chance “Walk the Line” would have gotten one of them.
More from GoldDerby
Star Chalamet has risen to number-four in the Oscar race for Best Actor, so at the moment he’s a probable nominee as well. He’s seeking his first recognition from the academy since earning a Best Actor bid for his breakthrough performance in the romantic drama “Call Me by Your Name” (2017). Co-star Norton plays folk singer Pete Seeger, and though he’s not positioned for a Best Supporting Actor nomination yet, he’s been on the rise and is currently ranked ninth in our odds. Similarly, the adapted script by Mangold and Jay Cocks (“The Age of Innocence,” “Gangs of New York”) isn’t in line for a nomination in what already looks like a crowded field, but it too has risen into the top 10.
