Oscars 2018: All the snubs and surprises, from James Franco to Steven Spielberg to Kobe Bryant
The 2018 Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday, with most of the usual suspects corralling nods for the 90th Academy Awards. Presumptive favorites scored, including The Shape of Water (13 overall nominations, one shy of the record), Dunkirk (eight), and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (seven). Meryl Streep will be competing for Best Actress for The Post, her 21st career nod, extending her record as the most-nominated performer. Composer extraordinaire John Williams notched his 51st for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the most nominations of living artists and second only to Walt Disney’s 59. Greta Gerwig became the fifth woman to be nominated for Best Director, for Lady Bird; while first-time filmmaker Jordan Peele made the cut for producing, directing, and writing the smash horror hit Get Out — becoming only the third person to pull off that feat. The Best Cinematography contest will feature Mudbound‘s Rachel Morrison, the first woman to be nominated in that category, alongside Blade Runner 2049‘s Roger Deakins, who is the most-nominated living cinematographer but has never won. And Christopher Plummer, 88, became the oldest acting nominee. When the dust settled, there were some jaw-dropping omissions and additions. Click through to see all the notable snubs and surprises. The Oscars will air March 4 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
